I have had another look at the Shako plate/badge. It is still not clear what it is, but having gone back to the original picture, it might be that the lower part of the inside is a hunting horn. If this is the case, this might be a light infantry / rifle badge. I have seen a picture/poster of Shako plates in my travels, but cannot remember where. The National Army Museum at Chelsea might be able to help. Hope this is of some use

Rod,

You know you just may be right ! This is another lead I will follow. Many thanks to you and Leofric who have been really really helpful. You can see why I can come to a dead stop before I got the images on here. The picture itself is only a  quater plate picture and although not bad quality does not take kindly to being scanned!!!
I will follow up you kind suggestions and will let you know how I get on. Thanks again for all your assistance. Cheers mate.

Best Regards,

Mark,

Rod is right. It does indeed look like the 'Hunting bugle' incorporated in the badges of the Light Infantry. I attach a copy 'googled' a few minutes ago for a better view. They vary a  bit but the basic design is the same. The thing is, is it a badge of a Light Infantry Regiment, or the Light Infantry company of an ordinary Line Regiment? !!! (Many regiments had one company of Light Infantry, used to skirmish ahead of the main body of troops, a dangerous occupation, I would have thought). The key to this is being able to decipher the numeral within the badge, and you think it may be 45 although I cannot see it...

Later...I can't get the wretched picture inserted...keep getting a message saying "you may have to reattach the image". I'll have to find out how to do it.

Leofric,

I really do appreciate yours and Rod's efforts. I don't know what type of compression that google uses for its images but I guess a jpeg or bmp will be attached for Rootschat. Well if you can try again I would obviously be very grateful. Alternatively if you can let me know a link I can look at it myself. Anyway even if you are not successful I still am amazed at all the help I am receiving at last from you guys!
Thanks again for your help.

Best Regards,

Hi Leofric

I was having the same type of message when uploading a picture.

try Additional Options - attach picture using browse button (pic must be on your pc) - DO NOT PREVIEW - just post it to site.

It worked for me  :)

Mark,

Success! The Light Infantry cap badge.

Ken,

Thanks for your advice - this time I didn't preview it and it worked straightaway.
