Hi
James and Margaret are also my GGGG Grandparents, have been researching them on and off for a few years now.
For your info. James Beattie who married Margaret Fitchet appears on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Scotland Censuses for Montrose. On all three censuses they lived on High Street, Montrose and in 1851 and 1861 - they lived at 110 High Street. On the 1851 Census, James Beattie's surname is spelt correctly but the rest of the family are all listed as Beatte. They had 11 children on the censuses, these were in order of eldest to youngest - John, James, Mary Ann, David, Catherine, Arthur, Edward, Alice, Margaret, Ada and Henry. James was listed on the 1851 Census as a Agent Joint Stock Bank and on the 1861 Census as a Bank Agent. I believe he may have been working for the British Linen Company Bank - if you go to Google books and look up the Directory to Noblemen and Gentlemen's Seats, Villages by Sutherland and Knox it mentions a "James Beattie" from Montrose of British Linen Co. They seem to have had some wealth, at least in 1861 as they have 3 female domestic servants according to the census. Their eldest son, John appears on the 1861 England census and was married to a lady named Emma Adamson - they lived in Lambeth in Surrey, again they must have had wealth as they were in there early 20's with two children, yet had 3 servants - at this time John was working for the East India Company as a mercantile clerk. Can't find James or Margaret Beattie after 1861 on the Scotland Censuses but their son John and wife Emma appear on the 1871 England Census as living in Westhumble in Surrey with 4 of their children, they are being visited by John's mother in law, Elizabeth Adamson and another visitor and have 2 servants. John is at this time working as an East India Merchant. In 1881, John and Emma are living in Wandsworth in London with 3 of their children and John's sister Margaret who at age 27 is still unmarried. John is now working as a clerk to a public company (I think this was the East India Company). When John and Emma were married, James, John's father was listed on the marriage certificate as being a Banker and Emma's father as a Gentleman (probably not of that much interest to you, but his name was James Adamson and he was a Supervisor for the Inland Revenue in England).
Anyway hope this helps, good luck with your research.
