Milltown, Co Galway
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 03:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Much to my joy I have just seen on the 1911 census that my Great-Grandfather Patrick Loughlin gives his birthplace as Milltown

Safe to say i'm more then pleased the 1911 census was the first when you filled in your own name etc - the last two census' have left more answers then questions - in that they give places that don't exist.

Milltown very much so exists  ;D

My question is, Where would you go from here?

I know Milltown is a small place so might i have to go to Galway City perhaps if i want to find more (if there are anymore) records?

Anyone know where I can get anything (books, websites etc) that concern Milltown history - I looked but can find nothing as yet.

Thankyou

Jonathan

you can look through the Co. Galway Parishes at this link at the Irish Times : http://www.rootschat.com/links/055d/  - each link shows a list of townlands included.

once you find the parish there is a list of parishes available on microfilm at the National Library in Dublin - see http://www.nli.ie

Galway Parish Records (transcripts) are also available on the pay site on Irish Family History Foundation - http://www.irish-roots.ie

the townland database at http://thecore.com/seanruad shows two places named Milltown in Co. Galway :

(Townland /Barony    / Civil Parish    /  PLU - registration district
Milltown         Dunmore    Addergoole    Tuam
Milltown         Tiaquin    Kilkerrin    Glennamaddy

I know Milltown well . Let me know the town land and I will see what I can find. Also the 1901 census is now online so it might be worth a look.

Hello, Galwayreader

Thats very kind of you.

I don't know what the town land was, but in 1891 Patrick gives birthplace as Ballywouness and in 1901 as Tuone.

I don't know if that is of any help.

Patrick was born in 1865 and moved to Lancashire in the late 1880's. His father was also Patrick, but that is all I know about his father, his name.

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
I don't think that those 2 places are in Milltown Co. Galway. Where did you come across the place names? How do you know that it is Milltown Co. Galway?
If you have any other info on your ancestor I may be able to help.

Hi, Galwayreader

The only reason I think its Co. Galway is because thats what i've been told by family as to where our family came from in Ireland.

Don't know if this helps, but my Great-Grandfather's wife Julia Connolly's family came from Kilmain in Co. Mayo which I see is not too far from Milltown, Co. Galway.

Sorry, I don't have any better information for you to go at.

Thanks

Jonathan

OK If I see anything useful I'll pass it on.
Milltown is a parish on the Galway Mayo border which has at least 60 or 70 townlands. You can search the Irish 1901 and 1911 census for free on line. Check the DED areas of Milltown, Doonbally and Addergoole (they are all Milltown parish)and you might see a few Loughlins. Best of luck
