... I have a possible baptism for Robert Snr on 20th Jan 1828 at Dromore RC Church to a James DOWNEY and Margaret CROTHERS. This has not been confirmed, but I am awaiting a reply from the Dromore RC Church clerk, who has offered to look up the church records for me.

The original register entry for this baptism is online, right page, second entry down:

You may have seen this, but just posting for the convenience of others reading this topic, the marriage of Robert Downey to Rose Burns in 1854, witnesses John Lavery and Jane Magee:

... Robert DOWNEY & Rose Ellen BURNS are my maternal great-great grandparents. Their son Robert Jnr is my great grandfather. He married Susan LONG at Dromore RC Church, she died in childbirth, and his 2nd wife was a protestant girl Gertrude Annie FAULKNER from Desertlyn, Londonderry where they married circa 1885 and we assume this is when he gave up his catholic faith ..

May be having a senior moment, but the only marriage I can see of a Robert Downey to Susan Long in the relevant timeframe took place in 1877 in County Leitrim, some considerable distance from the geographic context to this point of Dromore County Down.  There is a Leitrim townland in County Down, but the Robert Downey / Susan Long marriage definitely took place many miles away in County Leitrim.

I'm also struggling to find a civil marriage record on GRONI online for Robert Downey and Gertrude Annie Faulkner, do you have any further information?

There seem to be a few things that don't add up here  :-\

Robert Downey and family in 1911 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Pottinger__part_of_/Hornby_Street/221527
Wife Gertrude Ann born Belfast (not Co.Derry), married 36 years (c1875) with 12 children but only 7 living children.

I haven't found the marriage yet either but did find daughter Ellen's birth registration-
Ellen   Downey, 24 Jan.1889 Belfast (mother- Faulkner)

Found the family in 1901- should be Lecumpher St.:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Pottinger/Lecumpper_Street/1261804
'Annie' (aka Gertrude) born co,Derry this time

Also found more Belfast birth registrations but there's at least one other Downey/Faulkner couple having children at the same time.

Found an online tree (with errors) which says Gertrude Ann Faulkner born 5 Feb.1857 Londonderry, Co.Londonderry and died 4 Feb.1919 Belfast, Co.Antrim.
Note: tree shows a son John Downey (died WWI) but his (attached) army record gives mother Jane as next of kin  ::)

Still doesn't explain the 'missing' marriage

It is really REALLY annoying to spend time searching lots of places and type up details to post only to then find that the information has already been asked for (and searched/found) long ago  :o  >:(  ::)

Trying to fond information on my gg-grandfather Robert Downey, born abt 1853 Co Down. The 1911 census has him listed as 48yrs old but that must be incorrect, listed as 36yrs married (would make him 12, 10 yrs wrong). Many scratch out/corrections on form. Wife listed as Gertrude Ann (Faulkner) 2nd wife, age 41 born abt 1870. Any information would be great!!
reply #1 gives 1901 census & Gertrude's baptism
reply #3 says marriage not found
reply #4 details from death certificates

Won't bother posting any of the new information I found  :-X

Actually, I do need to post 1 more thing from an older thread-
My maternal GG Grandfather is John Rowley Faulkner Snr, married to Jane Ross 13th Jan 1888. He was a Sgt in the 2nd Battalion RIF at St Camp Aldershot at the time of his marriage. Their dtr Gertrude Annie was my Great Grandmother.  Are you related to this family ???

Baptism posted on other forum gives her father as James not John.
