Adelaide Marriage 1878-Thomas DAVIS to Ellen Jane JAMES
« on: Thursday 29 July 10 21:35 BST (UK) »
My first knowledge of Thomas DAVIS is when he married Ellen Jane JAMES in 24 April 1878, but where had Thomas DAVIS come from?
His marriage certificate says he was born England, 43 a widower, he is a carpenter living at North Adelaide and his father was Charles DAVIS.
His wife was Ellen Jane JAMES 25, spinster, living North Adelaide, the daughter of William James. They both signed their names.

In 2nd March 1879 a son Henry Malcolm DAVIS was born to the couple, the certificate now says he is a builder, living at Brompton.

In 1881 his wife Ellen died in hospital, probably in childbirth.

The son Henry Malcolm DAVIS was placed in care as a State Ward until he was 12 years old.

On 8th March 1884 Thomas DAVIS married again, aged 45, widower, builder, living at Stepney, father Charles DAVIS.
To Susan SMITH age 30, spinster, living at Stepney, father name William SMITH.

If he was born in England, why can’t I find him in England?

How did he get to Adelaide, South Australia?

When did he arrive in Adelaide?

Did he come with family to Adelaide?

Where do I find death date?

Hi,

A Big Welcome to RootsChat.  ;D

The first thing I notice with the death of Ellen is that the only Ellen DAVIS I see dying in 1881 is listed simple as Ellen aged 28 SINGLE - normally one would see the relative of a married woman would be listed as the husband. In this case there is no relative listed. (2 Feb 1881) died Hospital Adelaide 108 255 residence North Adelaide. Wondering if the marriage had possibly broken down.

Have you gone through the passenger lists for the arrival  of Thomas DAVIS? Looks like there are a few on the assisted lists and one would need to go through the lists to hope to find the correct one.

There are no births in SA to Thomas and Susan.

BISA not helpful

DAVIS Thomas married 27 Apr 1878 Nth Adelaide SA Ellen Jane nee JAMES

Cheers Kris  :)

Kris,
Death of Ellen Davis I found was 1 Mar 1881, no knowledge of family breakup other than death.
Have checked many shipping lists for Thomas Davis, there has been many Thomas Davis, Mr T. Davis, Mr. Thomas Davis and family but I have insufficient information to match my family to them, no knowledge of where they came from or County they came from.
Have not been able to match a William James arrival in Adelaide with any certainty either.
I am sure it is the same Thomas Davis remarrying in 1884.
Thanks for assistance.
Regards
Ernie

Hi Ernie,

The only Davis dying 1 Mar 1881 was Elizabeth who was aged 70. The date I provided for Ellen is correct.

Unfortunately it can be a problem with such common names as James and Davis to locate the family, particularly as you have no knowledge of where they may have come from. You mention having checked many passenger lists just checking - Have you checked for an arrival at the Adelaide Library?

Cheers Kris  :)

Thank you  for your assistance, I realise I do not have much proof, but I cannot match my information with Shipping lists.
I have not checked Adelaide Library as I am in Sydney.
I was desperate that perhaps someone also researching the names may respond.
I will keep looking.
Ernie

As to Thomas DAVIS - this is the most likely one I could find. I tried a few other Thomas DAVIS arrivals to SA but they were definitely not him. I was working backwards and didn't get to some of the earliest ones.

Travelling aboard the OAKLANDS which departed Plymouth 4 Jul 1878 and arrived Adelaide 22 Sep 1878

DAVIS
Thomas 43 - Bricklayer
DAVIS Ann 42
DAVIS Sarah 10
DAVIS Lucy 8
DAVIS Florence 3
DAVIS Charles Infant

Single women

DAVIS Emily 14 - with parents

With Single Men

DAVIS James 15 With Parents
DAVIS Jessie 12 With Parents

All were no 521 so I expect were all the same family. I had a bit of a look at the death indexes and did not see a death for Ann so will need to look further. There were no adult deaths aboard the ship.

Cheers Kris  :)

Sorry I just realised this arrival was after the marriage so this is not him.
