Need to find a place
« on: Friday 30 July 10 15:14 BST (UK) »
Carmarthen (llanelly I believe) looking for addresses on register office marriage certificate. "Hawks Villa and Jones Place". Earlier I was looking for Elizabeth Evans and now have marriage certificate. For some reason She left fathers name off son Evan Llewellyn Evans birth certificate of 1892 in Llanelly. So I got Evan's marriage certificate to find his dad's name was Llewellyn Evans (deceased before Evan's 1928 marriage) and listed as a Sailor in Merchant Service. I know there are docks listed in Llanelly so could he have been from there? Evan was listed as a 'Sand Boatman'. What was that?

If Elizabeth registered her son's birth it would have been assumed her husband was the child's father.  If there's no father named it implies he wasn't her husband's child.

As for addresses, I'd try Llanelli public library service as they may well have old maps and directories for the time.

If you have Elizabeth's marriage cert it should give Llewellyn's father's name which ought to help you find them in the censuses.

You can trace people in the merchant navy but I think you have to go to The National Archives in Kew to do it.
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Thanks but Llanelli library is quite a distance from me in Yorkshire!! As for Elizabeth's marriage certificate, I haven't found that yet. I only found out he had a father's name today.

Have you found them in the 1901 1911 censuses?

Llanelli and Burry Port are the sites of a long established cockle industry on the sands. Maybe Evan had something to do with that.

Swansea is only 10 miles from Llanelli and would have had a  merchant fleet (also Cardiff, Newport and Barry) and sailors would often travel between ports to pick up ships.

Does Evan's birth certificate mention Elizabeths maiden name ? If not I think you can asume she was not married when she had Evan.

Hi Chris

Found reference to a Jones Place Quay, Carmarthen - could this be the place?

Could'nt find anything for Hawks Villa I'm afraid, are you sure it was in Carmarthen?

Hi, Yes on the marriage certificate it says 37 Hawks Villa, Carmarthen (that is Annie Mary Veasey, b. 1904 llanelly) For Evan Llewellyn Evans (b. 1892 llanelly) it says he was a boat sandman living at 2 Jones Place Carmarthen. His father was given as Llewellyn Evans, Sailor Merchant service. They married in 1928 so obviously these places must have existed then. I will have to try and get a map I think. Thanks for looking for me.

I don't have any censuses so will have to visit a library and hope they have them.

Hi Chris

Forgot to mention, and apologies if you are aware of this already, but do not post anything about living relatives and I cannot give you any information from the 1911 census.
