no record of death overseas
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 10:06 BST (UK) »
I cannot find any details of how my father-in-law died as he was an officer on an Indian ship called the vickram jayanti? My wife was only 14 when he died and remembers that she was told he committed suicide in Nagasaki in 1964.

His full name was Roy Jessop Seccombe (Plymouth) and had a long history in the merchant marine serving with the Royal Fleet Auxillary during WW2.

I have tried the on-line overseas death records from consulates and high commissions etc but there is no record. Does anyone have any ideas and I would be grateful for any info.

Thanks

Maybe merchant navy records would have info - they are at The National Archives in Kew.

Info about records here:  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/officermerchantnavy.htm?WT.lp=rg-3181

Did he make a Will?  Would there have been a notice in a local paper (local to his wife and family, that is)?

Thanks for your help; I have obtained the record of medals awarded and his RFA service number from N Archives and will try newspapers and wills.

The Vikram Jayanti was  a new ship in 1964, built in Japan for the Jayanti Shipping Company and under long-term charter to Exxon.

There are two submitted trees on Ancestry that give his date of death as 22 June 1964.
