Willmore - Flitton, Silsoe Bedfordshire
« on: Friday 06 August 10 12:55 BST (UK) »
Greetings from South Africa!
I would be eternally grateful for  birth or marriage info for George Willmore(born btw.1718-1723). He had a son, John (1744), but his wife's detail is contradictory in Anc.co.uk. Anything else on that lineage would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat, and greetings from France

Have you checked the IGI at www.familysearch.org ? Virtually all Beds baptisma and marriages pre 1812 have been extracted from the parish registers. But rely only on those entries which say Extracted from... Those which say Record submitted by a member... are not to be trusted

Or you can access the extracted items via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle thus cutting out all the member submissions. Using this I can't see that the mother of John or his siblings was named in any of their baptisms. The IGI has a marriage of George Wilmore in 1742 in Higham Gobian, 3 miles from Flitton, which might be him (but these entries are member submissions, so need to be checked - I did say "virtually all!). You need someone with access to Higham Gobian transcript to see if it says that George was of the parish of Flitton

David

Edit - fortunately John and I didn't disagree!

Hello Flickw & welcome to RootsChat

The majority of Bedfordshire baptisms & marriages prior to 1812 are available on the IGI on the FamilySearch website.

George Wilmore was christened Flitton with Silsoe on 22 Feb 1719, parents John Wilmore & Elizabeth

His son John, most likely, was christened 09 Jun 1745 Flitton with Silsoe, but just states father as George Wilmore. No mother is stated. There is also a George Wilmore with just father George christened at Flitton with Silsoe on 23 Jun 1743

There are 4 member submissions of a marriage of George Wilmore to Hannah Smith on 29 Aug 1742 at Higham Gobion, which is not too far away from Flitton; who may be John & George junior's parents; but you need to verify this from the parish records.

Regards
John

PS David got in first but I had already typed it up so you've got it twice....

Thanks guys. I reached similar conclusions viz a viz the Higham marriage. Sounds feasible, but without documentation I am hesitant to add to my tree. Wish I could investigate in person . Ho -hum - maybe one day! BTW, I also checked the Friends records on Familysearch, since later generations of Willmores were practising Quakers - some attending Croyden School.
Regards
Flick

No need to. Higham Gobian parish register and bishops transcript  have been filmed by the LDS so are available to order and view at your nearest LDS Family History Centre. Both look to have large gaps, but the BT does cover 1742

Hi Flick;  The Higham Gobian marriage entry exists but just has date & names - no additional info, 29 Aug 1742 of George Wilmore to Hannah Smyth

The Flitton baptisms of John & George just say son of George Wilmore and his wife. There are many others baptised just saying son/daughter of Xxxxx and his wife. There is also a Sarah baptised on 7 Jan 1748 to George W & wife; & she was buried 10 Feb 1748, again just daughter of George W.

Searching further through the Flitton burials came across Hannah Wilmar age 92 on 15 Mar 1803, making her born 1711 - could she be the wife of George baptised 1719 ?

regards John

There is a Hannah Smyth baptised in Elstow December 17 1710.  Which would make her 92 in March 1803.

BUT... as per Elstow PR transcript... that baptism is of Hannah Smyth, adult !

GEO Wilmer,  Buried 20 May 1805, St John the Baptist, Flitton
Age 94, Pauper
( c 1711)
Obviously this is only as good as the informants knowledge of how old he was.

+ WM Wilmore buried 26 Nov 1747, Son of Geo*

I can see Baptisms for Geo 1743/Jn 1745/Sarah 1748/9
Cant find William.

All on FreeREG.

I also wondered about the 22 Feb 1717/18 Baptism to JN/ELIZ as earlier Children with Father John (Jn) have Mother as ALICE.
Thos 1710
Mary 1712
Jn 1713
Jn 1715
Wm 1716
All Flitton

Jn WILMORE married Alice GEE 08 Mar 1708/9 Flitton
