John Howard Whitby Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 19:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I have a John Howard born 1840 Chester.

In 1881 he is in Whitby with his wife Mary.

1891 again Whitby and his mother Frances born 1813 lives with him. John is listed as a " Seaman's Missionary " for his occupation

1901 Again in Whitby, occupation " Missionary reach "

Ok i can not be certain on a birth or marriage for John. And can not link him to any earlier census. So I can not find his father.

This missionary work. Was there a missionary in Whitby. family story has it that he ran soup kitchens and was a bit of a bible basher.

Any help would be much appreciated.

cheers

Ant

Hi Ant

A few possibilities -

On the familysearch pilot site there's s christening for a John Howard  in Feb 1841 in St Oswalds Chester(also Ann Howard in 1837 -same parents)

There's a marriage on the same site for Thomas Howard (mariner)to Frances Dean in March 1836 in Chester. He appears to be widowed at the time of his marriage.

http://labs.familysearch.org/

On the 1841 census a Thomas Howard (waterman) with his family in Eastham (township Whitby)

Then on the 1851 census there's a Thomas Howard with his wife Frances living in Liverpool(Toxteth Park) The son John was born in Chester and their daughter Ann born in Whitby Cheshire.

There same marriage is on the Cheshire Parish Register Database

You might like to have a look to see what you think.

Hope this helps

Many thanks again Neptune.

The family story went that they first came from Liverpool then moved to Cheshire. Your findings confirm this.

Cheers  :D

Hi Ant

You're welcome - I hope you are able to trace them.

On the same sites there's a christening for Frances Dean in 1813 in Chester - parents are John (shoemaker)and Ann.
A few more children born to John(shoemaker) and Ann - James , Ann and Richard - there may be more.

A marriage of John Dean(shoemaker)to Ann Clotton in Chester in 1807.

Sorry I couldn't help with Graces House.

Good Luck

Neptune

Hi, the person that you're referring to, John Howard Missioner born 1841(ish) is my great, great grandfather on my mother's side.
There is one of those old books available that shows historic images of the town (Ellesmere Port) that shows the old Mission building if you're interested?
