Does anyone know where I could look for information about Johns time as Provost & what exactly a Provost did?

In Scotland, the Provost (or Lord Provost) is the equivalent of the Mayor (or Lord Mayor) in England. He is the elected chairman of the town or city council, the civic head and most prominent citizen.

There will be plenty of information him in local newspapers. I'd suggest the Banffshire Journal and the Aberdeen Journal as your first port of call. How you access them would depend on where you are.

The archives of Banff Town Council will also contain lots of references to him. I think they may be in the Archives in Aberdeen. See http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/LocalHistory/archives/loc_ArchivesHomePage.asp

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
