I have located Robert Rice - he returned to England after abandoning his family and had at least three more illegitimate children named after his original children, Susan, Robert Henry and Mabel. Even though Janet said he was dead in the documention of her second marriage 1901 related to the time period when he left her (maybe two years later as he was definitely in Wellington in 1898). I have found this poor relief document of his mother Mary Ann Doyle when Robert was six years old. I would appreciate some extra eyes trying to help me decipher it. First part is where she lived, mentions her marriage date, death of Robert and when she received poor relief two weeks after his death. Who do you think saw Robert five weeks before he died? Mary Ann is referred to a pauper - I think it says her father is called Robert but he is definitely William from her marriage documentation. Can anyone make out what Lee ... ending with James Simpson says - looks like she married him in Dublin? Might explain why Robert said he was from London, Dublin and Belfast on different children's birth certificates. Looks like she didn't know her mother, father was born in the army and comes from Chatham (?) but not known there. Her husband had two brothers in the USA - never heard him talk about any relatives and never met any? Also is Michael perhaps a son before she married Robert? Hoping for some help here
