Ironworks Square, Galston
« on: Friday 13 August 10 13:23 BST (UK) »
Any information about Ironworks Square, Galston would be much appreciated.  My ancestors BRUCE/HENDRIE and HOWAT were living there around 1870.  I suspect it was a 'miners row' but maybe it had gone before the 1913 Ayrshire Miners Rows Report?

It is shown on an 1860's map as Howie's Square.  In James Mair's 'Pictorial History of Galston' there is an 1860 map of Galston and he quote "Barr Castle gardens is the site of the High Bowling Green, and across the railway is Ironworks Square described here as Howie's Square".
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. A later Census has the same ancestors living at Howies Square. It sounds as though they didn't move, their road just got renamed!

Hi Steph
That's interesting. What was your relatives surname? I may have her on some Census records.
There's some interesting material about Ironwork Square in the Newspaper Archive of FindMyPast. I guess it wasn't the most desirable address in the area.
Regards
Ian

ftp://It was still known as Ironworks Square in 1894. This extracted from a birth registered at GROS. FYI - the local pronunciation was "Gaw - ston" rather than "Gall - ston".
