Passenger lists Tasmania 1841
« on: Friday 13 August 10 18:05 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know whether passenger lists survive for ships arriving in Launceston, Tasmania in 1841? The ship I'm interested in is the barque 'Andromeda', which I believe arrived in Launceston 30 August. There were bounty migrants on board - including four or five brothers named Page (nominated by F Spencer of Launceston), from Kent, England. I'd be grateful for any advice on where I might look for Tasmania arrivals.

Hi

Tas Archives site lists the ships arrival but only lists 5 passengers. The list must be incomplete, I dont know if you can get more info by contacting the Archives.

Thanks for replies so far. The posting mentioned which involves members of the Page family is what I'm trying to investigate. I've been looking at the parish records for this family, and the data given in this posting does not fully stack up. I was hoping to find further evidence of which Page men did actually arrive in Launceston aboard the 'Andromeda'.

Thanks for these names and details ... though the cat is now firmly among the pigeons, as I have no idea who Thomas Page might be (unless he was the son of Charles (Robert) Page. Does the 'Free' status imply that these men were once transportees, or does it mean that they are voluntary settlers?

No, they were free settlers according to the database & you said they arrived in 1841.

The database usually records ex-convicts as 'free by servitude' on the shipping database.

The ship Andromeda only made on trip to VDL as a convict ship & that was 23 Feb 1827.

Dear Yelkcub
The 5 brothers who arrived on "Andromeda" in 1841 were:
Henry (b.1811) with wife Sarah and 2 children
Charles Robert (b.1813) with wife Rebecca and 3 children
James (b.1816) with wife Matilda
William (b.1819) and John (b.1823)
They were sons of Charles Robert Page and his wife Sarah.
Re your other question - in 1852 Charles, James and Charles'
son Thomas (b.1835) went to Melbourne on the "Mariposa",
it is believed heading for the Victorian goldfields. They returned
to Tasmania not long after, so luck must not have been with
them. They were not convict people. All free from Kent.
In the late 1850's James and John left Tasmania permanently,
and lived in Victoria.
HTH - what is your interest in the PAGE family?
Cheers TBL
