Hi all,

I think the Francis Acton who went to Australia was actually born in Birmingham. Francis and his younger brother John were in Lichfield at the time of the 1841 Census, but there is no record of a baptism for either of them there. Although the dates are slightly off for Francis (he would have been 10 in 1841, not 9), I think this is his baptism record:

Name:   Francis Acton
Gender:   Male
Baptism/Christening Date:   26 May 1831
Baptism/Christening Place:   St. Philip, Birmingham, Warwick, England
Birth Date:   22 Oct 1830
Birthplace:   Suffolk Street
Father's Name:   Thomas Acton
Mother's Name:   Sarah

Then there is another baptism record for his brother John:

Name:   John Acton
Gender:   Male
Baptism/Christening Date:   31 Mar 1834
Baptism/Christening Place:   SAINT MARTIN,BIRMINGHAM,WARWICK,ENGLAND
Birth Date:   23 Mar 1833
Father's Name:   Thomas Acton
Mother's Name:   Sarah

There aren't any Francis or John Actons in Birmingham who correspond with these dates of birth in the 1841 Census, so it looks pretty likely that they are the right records for your ancestor and his brother.

Transcripts of the baptisms are available at:

Further to my last message, I also see two death records for a Thomas Acton in Birmingham in June quarter of 1838:

Surname: Acton
First name: Thomas
District: Birmingham
Volume: 16
Page: 255

Surname: Acton
First name: Thomas
District: Birmingham
Volume: 16
Page: 257

Either of the above could be the father of Francis and John. You can order a copies of the original records at:

Many thanks for the new info.  I looked up the two death entries and found (from copies of the original scans) that they are the same event and should actually read page 256 (instead of 255, 257 or 25-).  It appears three transcribers got it wrong or incomplete!  I have submitted corrections to FreeBMD.  Just goes to show it pays to look at the details carefully.  I can probably afford one certificate for a fishing expedition.

Any luck with Thomas Acton's death record? Did it give his age or any other useful info?

i got so excited when i found this thread, then realised it ended in 2012! I am also related to the Actons of Lichfield, Elizabeth Acton married John Warner and then my line began - all of the men in my family going back generations have Acton as a middle name, apparently we are linked to the Actons who own a large house somewhere!
