rathgar village, dublin
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 11:18 BST (UK) »
There is a lane in Rathgar village, between the Extravision shop and the stalled Superquin development, which now has a new plaque (in the old green style complete with Irish translation) calling it Washerwoman's Lane.  We used this lane when we were kids and it was just an overgrown short cut but obviously it has an older history than that.  Any ideas?

There is a book called Thomas Edmondson and the Dublin Laundry: a Quaker businessman, 1837-1908 by Mona Hearn that decribes the area and that of Washerwoman's Hill in Glasnevin and similarly named places around Dublin, particularly close to streams and rivers for obviously reasons.

It is also listed in "An Essay on the Population of Dublin" based on a 1798 survey by Rev. James Whitelaw of St. Catherine's
There were 10 occupied houses with 33 male and 57 female inhabitants

Thanks for that - the Edmondson book looks fascinating - I had no idea, for example, that Milltown had almost 300 laundry workers.  Do you know how I might access the second source you quote?

I initially read it in a library but it is now available online as a Google Book
Just google the name and click on the books option on the top left of your screen (Web is the normal default) and enjoy!

Just noticed in your surnames Keogh which is my maiden name. My dad was from Dublin, Milltown area I believe. Just wondered where your Keoghs may be from.

Still searching!
This is on my OH's side (I've adopted them on behalf of our children)

Patrick Butler married a Margaret Keogh in the 1830s;
Their son Tobias Butler married twice first possibly Winifred Lawless; second Catherine Kidd in 1866;
They had a large family but their daughter Elizabeth married Patrick Fox in 1900;
They had 4/5 children, one of whom is my husband's grandmother!
The families all are Harold's Cross or Terenure (Roundtown) based.

I have yet to investigate Margaret and her origins in detail - every time I find a new surname I add it to the list!

There is every possiblity there is a connection as Milltown is not far from Terenure

Patrick FOX's parents were Patrick FOX and Mary WARREN

They are shown on the 1901 census as aged 50 and 40 respectively - LINK
Residents of a house 67 in Harolds Cross Road (Part) (Rathmines, Dublin)
living with their children
Patrick Joseph b.Feb 29 1876
Hugh Joseph b.Sep 18 1877
Anne/Annie b.Apr 16 1877
Thomas b.Aug 12 1881
Margaret (Maggie) b.May 20 1885
Bridget Mary b.Apr 28 1887
Catherine Mary (Kate) b.Sep 04 1889
also in the house was Patrick's wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) nee BUTLER and their eldest child Patrick

by 1911 they were aged 62 and 50 respectively - LINK
Residents of a house 51.2 in Clanbrassil Street, Lower, East Side (Wood Quay (part of), Dublin)
living with children Hugh, Thomas, Maggie and Kate; grandchild Francis Thorpe (son of Bridget) and a cousin Lizzie WARREN

There are discrepancies in their ages as the 1911 census states Mary FOX was aged 50 but also that she was 50 years married; possibly a badly written 30 - they actually married in 1875; this in turn implies Mary WARREN was only 15 years old when she married. So much not to take for granted!

I have not purchased the marriage certificate of Patrick FOX and Mary WARREN to find out fathers' names etc.; several of their children had baptism sponsors named WARREN
