India Help
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 13:21 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find anything! I've looked on Fibis, census records, family search etc etc and can find so little about the India(n) side of the family, even my Grandmother doesn't appear to exist!

What I know so far is...

Alick Ennis married (a woman) in India, we think she is a native Indian lady. In 1888 they had a daughter May Lena Ennis. Jan 14th 1914 saw her married to Alfred H Graham (who I'm not having problems with) and in the March of 1914/15 they had their only child Ellen Barbara Graham. On 15 sept 1937 in Cawnpore, India she married Thomas Santus. They had a daughter Francis around 1938, and in 1939 they moved to England. There aren't many problems once they get to the Uk.

We know that the family lived in Cawnpore and Allahabad, and my Grandmother (ellen) went to school in Shimla at the Lawrence school. The cousins of the family were the Connolly's who were gentlemans tailors in Allahabad/Cawnpore

I welcome any help, hints, tips etc as I'm starting to go a bit crackers :P
Thanks all

PS: I'm indrawignall1 on ancestry.com, just in case that comes up in searches
Coppull/Chorley: Wignall, Graham, Priestley, Welch, Birchall, Sellers

Wigan: Santus, Graham, Frost, Bibby, Hague

Blackburn: Moore

Southport/Ormskirk: Sephton, Sutch, Hooton, Leadbetter, Blevin

India: Santus, Graham, Ennis, Connolly

London: Graham, Hopkins, Wortham

NB: Indian Graham's not related to Coppull Graham's! Both Grandmothers had the same Maiden name but are not related! Weird!

Might May Lena Ennis have been baptised Mary Helena or Mary Helina Ennis?

There was a girl of that name born 5 October 1888 in Nawodik Bengal to Charles Alexander ( Alick????) and Agnes Ennis

I have seen this one, and I know that Agnes' surname is Dimpha (sp?) so it could be, but I'm almost sure that she was May Lena, it's what she is recorded as on the wedding information.
I have a feeling that there is two of them with a similar name knocking about just to annoy me :p

ShaunJ: it could be, but Mum was almost sure that May had no siblings, nobody was ever mentioned and my mum spent alot of time with May when she was growing up.
The addition of the name Connolly however does hint that she could be wrong, but the placename is one that has never been mentioned before, and India was spoken about a lot in the family. I shall have a look into this and see if I can follow it along to a name I recognise though.
Thanks :D

My mum was baptised Mary but has always been known as May. And it's a short step from Helina to Lena.

Another mention of Dympna Agnes Connolly (her birth is in the IGI as Connelly)

Like I said I will look into it, but I don't think it's right. I don't think she had siblings, it's the wrong name and the wrong part of India.
I have found these names before and they don't seem to fit. It's all driving me a bit mental :( I can't even find my nan and I KNOW her details. I think they don't exist and I'm just a figment of my own imagination :P

Nawodik seems to be a place name known only to LDS transcribers

Google 'handily' suggested somewhere in Poland *sigh* but I think it maybe one of the many places that got renamed, I also found Nadia in West bengal, which it could be.
