ANSELL family
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 13:41 BST (UK) »
Would someone be kind enough to help me out with this family as I cannot find birth, marriage and death records.

I am tracing John Abraham Ansell born to Edwin and Mary Ann nee Melchior 1859 in St Giles, Middx. He married Hannah in Jul 1879 in Newington. According to 1881 and 1891 census he was a Butcher. He had 8 children in all Mary Gertrude, Jessie, Ethel Maud, Edwin John , Rose Hannah, Albert Melchoir, Daisy Alice all baptised at St John the Baptist, Croydon and Winifred Augusta born Wandsworth.

The batism records have been found through IGI for the first 7 children and have found birth records through FreeBMD for 6 of the 7 but, cannot find the birth record for Rose Hannah bap 14 Jun 1885.

Also I cannot find a definite death record for John Abraham as the 1911 census states Hannah is widowed and as I cannot trace any of the remaining members of the family on the 1901 census he must have died between 1891 and 1911.

As I cannot trace this family after 1911 could they possibly have emigrated or something worse?

Sorry there is a lot to digest and I hope I have explained it clearly, so any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Hi Marie

In 1891 - Rose A ANSELL age 9, is with her Granny ANSELL in 1891 Croydon, along with her sisters : Mary G 10, and Daisy A 2.

I see Rose was baptised Jun 14 1885 - same day as her 4 siblings (Mary, Jessie, Ethel & Edwin)
Search Labs / IGI have her chr as Rose Hannah
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

but  I'd say she is probably registered as:
Rose Annie ANSELL - Dec Qtr 1881, Croydon

For Ref:
1891 the children are:
Mary G 10
Rose A 9
Jessie 8
Ethel M 7
Edwin J 6
Arthur (sic) M 4 (but birth & bp. as Albert)
Daisy A 2
Winifred A 4 mths
parents: John 34 and Hannah 33, b St Jiles, London

Cheers

ooh - you were just to quick for me Ambly - I had come to the same conclusion but got the red writing when starting to type!

In answer to the other points - I will have a hunt on 1901 and see what I can see

And as for tracing after 1911 - well that is always difficult as there is not another census!
Have you searched for marriages for them?

Are any of the children still with Hannah on 1911?

Or have any been found elsewhere on 1911?

There are numerous possible marriages for several of them  (eg Rose 1905 Lambeth, Jessie Annie 1907 Lambeth, Rose A 1911 Bethnal Green, several Ethel Ansells,  but some for others too)

1901 is proving to be a pain- no joy there.
Again 1911 findings in more detial may help.

FreeBMD has several John Ansell deaths of the right age (ish) between 1891 and 1911

The nearest geographically is
1909 in Camberwell age 48

Hi

Agree - nothing coming up in 1901 any which way  ???

But I wonder if they upped sticks and went to the US of A

This from FindMyPast:
departed Southampton, destination New York
ANSELL
A  (female) 1863
Gertd M 1873
Jessie 1883
Ethel 1886
Edward 1887
Bertie - 1888
Daisy 1890
Winny 1892

Not sure if they all travelled together but sure looks like them, missing Rose and father, John. And Hannah down a "A" (misread of an "H"?)  With ages a bit out here and there.

Cheers

Yep.

Winifred was naturalised as a US Citizen in 1926 / 1928 - said she arrived 1923.
But it looks as if she made a trip back to the UK in 1923.

Just pulling those details together now  ;D
