Just a thought.. does anyone know what the rarest name in GB is? ???

I'm more intrigued to complete the list of the top 20

So far I've got:

1.   Smith 652,563
2.   Jones 538,874
3.   Williams 380,379
4.   Taylor 306,296
5.   Brown 291,872
6.   Davies 279,647
7.   Evans 222,580
8.   Thomas 202,773
9.   Wilson 201,224
10. Johnson 193,260
11. Roberts 187,871
12. Robinson 165,193
13. Thompson 162,920
14. Wright 161,391
15. Walker 155,734
16. White 154,147
17. ?
18. ?
19. Green 145,856
20. Hall 145,231

But what are 17 and 18??

Would it be something like Johnston?

And how changed is it with names like Patel , Coetzee and Khan , Singh etc

Here in Australia, you would have to factor in names such as Tran, or Nguyen as well.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Carrington, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Bentham, Holloway, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Yorks, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

All four of my grandparents have counts of under 1000, one of them (my own birth surname) is under 250.
On one hand this should make it easier researching relatively rare surnames. But because they are not common there is probably a much higher chance of lots of spelling variations on records and in mistranscriptions from those records.

I can understand on old records a lot of variations because literacy levels weren't high and spelling was more flexible.
But even in the 1960s / 1970s it was surprising the number of different ways our local newsagent could spell our six letter / two syllable surname when marking up the papers for delivery.

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Scott, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott
Essex/Herts: Livermore, Holgate, Law, Day, Myson, Boyton
Norfolk/Suffolk: Stone, Alexander, Tipple, Ingate

Going through the tree and the rarest I can find is Gauler, with only 25 and ranked =78,618th . From all the research I've done they are all related!  :)

Cosburn: 51, ranked 50162
Shadrake came in with 83, ranked 37228

Although 'Nancekieville' seems to have gone extinct!  :(

Clarke coming in with 139654 people and ranking 23rd

I will have another look when I get more time and add if I find something new.
Devon: Bibby, Bird, Chaplin, Davey, Littlejohns, Pope, Shire, Sloman, Tucker
Dorset: Gauler
Gloucestershire: Gauler
Hampshire: Kimber
London: Crump, Gauler
Middlesex: Crump
Monmouthshire: Brunt
Northumberland: Bibby
Somerset: Clarke, Dibble, Duddridge, Parsons, Pool, Poole, Shire, Silvester
Surrey: Clarke
Wiltshire: Gauler

I would be grateful if you could complete this survey:
