This thread is very interesting reading.
For the names I would be likely to do a study on:
Pine/Pyne  1234  ranking 5577/ 1993  ranking 3702  ( I have started extracting entries from the GRO indexes and the censuses)

Dowdeswell  988  ranking 6678 And Dowdswell  12  ranking 127230

Sando/Sandoe/Sandow  86  ranking 36388/ 100  ranking 33148/ 136  ranking 27252

All fairly manageable I think. The reason I would do any of these is the strong possibility of a common origin of each.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

You wouldn't half have a strange game of chess if the number of pieces you had was proportionate to the surname occurrences, though.

There are:-

113,489 Kings
973 Queens
35,253 Bishops
61,693 Knights
8,763 Castles, along with 2,129 Rooks

But no Pawns at all (nor Prawns, nor Shrimps, nor Porns)

I did, however, find 5 Serfs.

And ... since they have not counted names with fewer than 5 occurrences ... that makes Serf one of the (equal) rarest rated names.
