Daw Green, Dewsbury?
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 10:41 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born in Dewsbury in 1892.

I've just found his baptism on the LDS pilot site: 9 March 1872 at "Daw Green, York." I've been searching for it on Google Maps without success.

Can anyone help me locate it and possibly the church (might be catholic - not sure)? It won't necessarily be in Dewsbury as the famly moved around Yorkshire with a travelling fair.

Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill

From Genuki

"DAW GREEN, a hamlet in the parish of Dewsbury, in the West Riding of the county of York, 4 miles N.W. of Wakefield."

I thought I had seen this name mentioned before, this link may help you to track it down. Reply #4

If you zoom in you will find Daw Green mentioned just next to Hanover Street,

I think on the IGI they just put York rather than Yorkshire as there was an entry nearby which said Huddersfield, York and another entry actually in York, York.

How interesting! Right next to Hanover Street.

Thanks, Evie.

I'm struggling to find the church indicated just left of 'Boothroyd' on the map, and north of the crematorium, but when I zoom in, it seems to disappear!! Unless it's 'PW' but am struggling to think what that could stand for. Obviously not a good day for my brain!!

Hi

If you use google maps and put in Boothroyd, it looks as though it might be St John's Church.

However there may have been more, my computer has just had a tantrum and I lost what I was looking at but will have a look later for you

Hi

The other one I spotted was St Matthew's Church which is also quite near Hanover Street. It is now converted into a house. It is on Huddersfield Road.

Hi Jill

It is a shame the IGI doesn't give which church it was.

Lastly you mentioned possibly a Catholic Church, there is one on Huddersfield Road at the junction of Cemetery Road, which again is not that far from Hanover Street.
