Electoral Rolls Dublin between 1901 and 1911.
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 16:01 BST (UK) »
Does anybody know if there were electoral rolls taken in Dublin between the censuses?
If so, I suppose if they are not available on line, they might be in a library or the archives?
Were the regulations for entry similar to England and Wales?
ie only people over 21, entitled to vote etc. etc.

The Dublin City Library (Pearse St) has Dublin City Electoral Rolls. As far as I know the oldest surviving data is from 1939 - which they have online : http://dublinheritage.ie/index.php

updated : here are details of their collection - link  and link

Excellent question Kooky and a very comprehensive answer from Shane.

The topic begs some questions.

What happened between 1922 and 1939? Did the Free State government (1922-1937) compile Registers of Electors? If so, what happened to them?

From 1937 to the present time (i.e. since the Constitution) there seems to be a continuous but incomplete series.

What happened before 1922 when Ireland was part of the UK? Did the British Government compile Electoral Registers? If so, do they still exist?

From a historical point of view (apart from the usefulness to genealogists like ourselves) the importance of Electoral Registers during this transitionary period is surely of some significance. I'm sure some historian must have studied this area.

Dara.

Dara,
thank you for your input.
I hope you are correct and someone has looked into this.
I wonder if Quaxer has any thoughts?
Also thank you Shane.

I was asking because I have family in the 1911 census, who are not apparently in the 1901 :-\
I doubt if they will be in any directory.

the National Archive has quite a number of Electoral Registers of various Counties - one used to have to order them up the day before.

The earliest city ones I looked at were from ~1928 or so, though there was a Malahide one from 1912

(just checked some old notes - they mostly seem to start about 1915 - I haven't done anything with the books for several years)
