Evanton, Easter Ross
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 15:52 BST (UK) »
Seeking photos and memories of The Novar Arms, Evanton.
My aunt, Agnes Fowler was one time manageress of this establishment.
I am uncertain of the date but probably between, 1950-1970.
Her husband George, worked for Feris and Sons, Ag. Engineers of Inverness.
Grateful for any help.
Ian

There is a little bit here:

Novar Arms Hotel
Established 1856. George and Margaret Munro were there in 1891 and up to WWI. They had a large family. It was run by Cromarty Firth State Control from World War 1 the early 50s and used to be packed out by forces personnel in WW2. It was bought by Mackay, Dingwall and the first manager under renewed private ownership was Mrs Sanderson from Caithness. John S. Omand, from Caithness, bought from James Paterson in 1990

Hello Tullipoo

Up until a year ago, I used to drive past the Novar Arms Hotel, daily, and more recently, maybe once per month.

Its still a thriving small hotel, has an "open" diningroom and a popular local pub.  Sunday lunches are recommended.  The hotel is well frequented during the summer season by visitors staying at the local caravan park.

One of my friends, used to be the Manageress since the change of ownership, 1990.

Should you wish any personal details, please send me a personal message and I'll enquire for you....

Tulipoo, Reply No 2, with the photo link.

Meant to say, that's quite an old pic!  Nowadays there are wooden tables with benches, and whisky barrels with flowers, out front, on the pavement.

Cheers

Hello Tullipoo

My ex-Manageress friend of the Novar Arms Hotel, Evanton has replied saying that 'Christine & Jocky' bought from James Patterson and she managed for them.

She'll be visiting me-October and will have much more info/history for you then.

Cheers

This thread is almost 2 years old, but I thought you might be interested in this:  My 3x greats grandfather's sister (Ann Chisholm) and husband (Roderick Munro) were likely first owners/operators of the Novar Arms.  They are shown there in 1851 census (Evanton Inn), and since it is on "Balconie Street" probably also in 1841.

They died there in 1856 and 1869 respectively.

I currently have a Scavenger Hunt going on the Chisholms that has uncovered this info.
