Albert James Cox

Looking for Albert James Cox born 1874, but do not know where. Turned up in Rotherham Yorkshire in 1919 and had 5 children with Ethel May formerly Middleton born 1890 Nottingham. Albert died in Rotherham in 1939. Cannot find record of a marriage, but all children's birth certificates show Albert as father.

Hi,

What years were the children born?

The only marriage I could find that matches at all , was this one in Coventry in 1918...was Ethel ever known as Ada?

Even though it may say on a childs birth certificate "mother formerly" that does not indicate that a legal marriage actually took place.

Thanks for the information. Do not know of Ethel may ever being know as Ada. Definitely Ethel May on birth and death certificates.

Children are John Edward b 1910, Beatrice Mary 1920, Albert James b1921  d1921, Winifred May 1923, George 1925.

Albert was definitely Albert James.

Certainly a mystery!

On the 1891 Ethel May is a 1 years old in Nottingham with a father Arthur 24 a Frame Smith and mother Emma 24 and sibling Frances M 4.

I note the first child was born 1910 and all the subsequent ones close together, 1920,1921,1823, and 1925 that's a 10 year gap between the first and second which is most unusual and 9 years prior to them appearing in Rotherham in 1919

Have you searched for them in the 1911 census  ???

Hi

Have you found him on any census? How do you know he was born in 1874?

I presume you have all the children's birth certificates, if so what does he give as his occupation (especially on John Edwards) as this might help to find him? Also where was John Edward born?

Have searched the 1911 census and can't find Ethel May either as Middleton or Cox. John Edward we know was born in Nottingham in September 1910 according to his death certificate. We also know that he was born out of wedlock. Have not been able to obtain a birth certificate for John Edward from either of the two Nottingham register offices.

Albert James died in 1939 aged 65, so he could have been born in either 1873 or 1874. His occupation on all of the other children's birth certificates was labourer of one kind or another.

Thanks to everyone who have helped so far. We have been searching for Albert and John's birth details for at least 5 years and have exhausted all of the options and sources which we are aware of. Both seem to be enigmas, but we will persevere. Only another 10 years until the 1921 census is published so maybe we will get some answers then.
