In my friends tree she has a three g aunt Esther Ormiston b 28/11/1813 Kelso to John Ormiston (shoemaker) and Mary Marshall his wife who married in Kelso 28/5/1807. Don't have any further info on her though.

Doesn't help with your query I know but might be a connection.

Terry

Hi Allan and Terry

Good local knowledge there, Terry  :D

I think that these two are the grandparents of Mary on the 1841. Certainly, John was a shoemaker.

As Terry will confirm,  Marshalls were quite well known right across the borders. Ankerdine has a few threads on them in Kirkcudbrightshire.

Hi Terry and Gadget
Thanks for your info, yes Esther Omiston is a Relative of Mine , her Daughter Janet Douglass married Robert Hewison in Sunderland around 1859. they had about 10 kids one of Wich was Mary Douglass Hewison who in Turn Married my Gt Grandfather Douglas Robson in Sunderland in 1882.
I dont know if the the Douglass's were Gypsies, the info you have on the 1841 Census is correct except for having Esther Down as Elizabeth which looks like a Census error

Regards
Allan

Here they are in 1851. I'd read the  29 and 27 as 39 and 37 - funny 2s  ::)

It was Terry's 1813 birth that made it click  :D

27 Queen Street, Sunderland
HO107/2397/418/60

Douglas
Robert, 40, baker
Esther, 37
William, 13
James, 11
Jessie, 10  (=Janet)
Euphemia, 2, b. Sunderland

All but Euphemia b. Scotland

Definitely down as Elizabeth in the 1841, Allan.  As Terry says Eliz(s)abeth is a lesser known synonym for Esther.

 8) 8) 8)

I'll be there on Sunday. I'm a season ticket holder. If you see any of their games on the tele, I'm the one wearing a red jacket  ;D

We're going back to Tyneside in an hour and will be passing through Roxburghshire - we always avoid the A1 if we can  :)

Allan,
It will get better.  My husbands type of business always get hit first (Construction akin to) mezzanine floors but is always the first to rally.
His work load went down to nothing and is now on the rise.

Stick at it, it will come around to better sunnier days again.
