Not "hard & fast" but Nicholson in Scotland is a Skye name & Nicolson a Shetland name.

Did you ever find Jane's parents?  Could this be the family on the 1841 census,living in Dunblane
William 55 born Perth Army Pensioner
Elizabeth 45 born England
Margaret 15 born Ireland
Jean 10 born Ireland
A Margaret Nicholson married a William Gardiner in Dunblane 1850.
Not sure if this will help or just muddy the waters.
