I know what you mean, Salmynka, Jim is such an expert I did indeed wonder if it was ME or HIM.

But I only see concrete (or perhaps a stone path, looking a bit like crazy paving) and some rough ground.

As I said, odd place to take a shot unless there is some significance in the location.

Bron, do you have an idea who this might be, and if so what part of the country did she come from?  Perhaps we could have a better guess if we knew?

Hi all!

Thanks for your input.

I firmly believe it has come from my grandfather's family, they lived in Blaenau Ffestiniog from mid 1890's onwards, although family links to Dolwyddelan too. I'm puzzling as to who it could be.

His sisters were born 1896 and 1902, and I think this women looks older and heavier than they would be from the photographs I have of them. They were also generally smarter than this woman.  As mentioned, thought it was his mother (1859-1919) , but now have discounted that as age/date don't fit. Strange though as very few pics have survived being passed down, making me feel that the pics that have survived are of particularly significant people.

Have shown it to a Blaeanu local today who has a feeling as I do that it could be a quarry gateway (both great grandfathers and earlier were all quarrymen). He suggested the dark box/wall in the background could be some kind of transformer. It looks more like smooth metal than wood/stone to me. He has given me the email of someone at Gwynedd archive who is also a Blaenau local.  A tad embarrassed about troubling him though as it's hardly an earth-shatteringly relevant photo!

Certainly agree it likely has some significance to the subject though  as it's not the most picturesque spot to pose for a photograph!

My Genes Reunited Blaenau contact has just messaged me with the thought that the rocky outcrop in the picture reminded him much of the area opposite the Commercial Hotel Blaenau.

Have just google street-viewed "Commercial Petrol Station Blaenau Ffestiniog" and can see the similarity in the backdrop. Swivelling the view round to the other side of the road, next to the Commercial Hotel is St David's Church, which has a gate in a very similar style to the gate in my photograph. Maybe all gates look like that anyway??

Still none the wiser, but a harmless way to while away a Sunday afternoon   ;)

Must go to work now however!
