lewis's of manchester
« on: Tuesday 31 August 10 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Are there any old(very old!) ex employees of the above firm who know if and where any staff records or photographs are kept? I have a gold pocket watch presented to my husband's grandad in 1913 by Eliot Lewis and Herbert D. Cohen for service to the firm  (as a commissionaire) Would love to view any records.

Betty P

Maybe somebody's Gran or Grandpa worked there at that time?

I just saw this post, having joined in the last minute.

My great great great uncle was David Lewis (born Levy) the founder of Lewis's department store in Liverpool which had several branches, including Leeds, Selfridges (after Mr. Selfridge) and Manchester - it's then directors were my great grandfather Eliot Lewis (born Levy, in NSW Australia) and my great great uncle Herbert David Cohen (born NSW, Australia).

Unfortunately, I have no idea where any records might be kept.

I can support the story from BettyP. I have recently acquired a pocket watch. Inscribed to WH Holdsworth from Eliot Lewis and Herbert D Cohen 1913. I would be interested in any information about WH Holdsworth. The watch is relatively high status and thus I might expect that WH had some status in the company?

Would Manchester Central Library be of any help? Could be worth contacting them. Perhaps the local Chamber of Trade may know where records have gone.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
