COMPLETED WITH THANKS 1854 Onehunga marriage cert and questions
« on: Friday 03 September 10 06:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have recently received a printout, this is my transcript of it.
115   1854   No. 3
20th November R.C. Church Onehunga,  Michael ALLEN 21 Shoemaker bachelor and Winifred CREUSE 17 Servant spinster "No signatures required at this time" Minister's signature EJ Clery.
Some questions of mine are:
a) Where would I learn who gave permission for the bride to marry (her step father was a Fencible ex Oriental Queen 1849 from memory) ?
b) Who was the minister? -- have I transcribed correctly, it could be E I Cleny or Clergy. I am not sure.
c) What would be the address for that church, would the parish records still exist etc ?
d) Would any NZ F.H. group be interested in the printout and my known details of the children of this marriage and copies of the NSW death certs for the couple ?

Cheers,  JM

Dear JM
Yes the NZ fencibles group would welcome your contact
for a small sub membership of the group is very woethwhile
as is contacting the archivist and see what info is held on any fencible

eg I got a bundle of 30 pages for mine, including church records, land details, court cases etc....
a) the church record will probably have all details

there is a special fencible groupboard that is available on different site

Hi JM,

To answer your questions in order:

A)The Intention to Marry Notice (e.g. the marriage licence) might mention who gave permission, but I suggest you take Althea's suggestion first and see if the fencibles group can answer the question for you.
B) Again, The Intention to Marry Notice.
D) The NZ Society of Genealogists (NZSG) would be very keen to receive your information and certificates about this family group although you would have to become a member, I suspect. Contact the NZSG and discuss it with them http://www.genealogy.org.nz/ Any family group before 1900 goes into their First Families Collection.

As an aside, I'm reading through names on the Fencibles site and on same Oriental Queen voyage I've noticed another chap from different branch of my tree ... been looking for how he got to NZ for yonks  ;D
I'm a happy lass twice over at this moment  ;D And now another name too this time  of the 58th Reg ... John Crummy (got lots on him thanks, so another mystery solved  he was recruited in NZ ;D)
How lucky can I be  ;)
