gravestones in Cobh (Queenstown)?
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 15:25 BST (UK) »
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.
I would like to know if there are records of gravestones in Cobh.

My great-great-grandfather Philip Dawson died in 1901 in East Hill, Queenstown (now Cobh) and his wife Mary had died 1881 there.  They were Roman Catholic.

I wonder where they would be buried, and how one could go about finding their gravestone?

There don't seem to be indexes on the net, but the name of the main cemetery would be useful.

Many thanks

The main cemetery in Cobh is called Old Church (Clonmel) Cemetery.  A lot of the Navy and also the Lusitania victims are buried there.

There is also a cemetery in Ballymore.

For contact details look at http://www.cobhharbourchamber.ie/genealogy.html

The Cathedral in Cobh has computerised records of burials in Ballymore, if you contact them they might be able to help you.

Also the Cobh library has the full transcriptions of all the headstones in the Old Church cemetery. Just google Cobh library

I have photographed most of the Old church cemetery in Cobh and having checked I didn't come across Dawson.  Are you looking for any other names from Cobh?

If you go to the contact page of www.visitcobh.com
and send a message requesting the contact details of historian Jack Gilmartin, I will send his details to you . He has ALL of the burial records in Cobh computerised on a searchable database!

My mother's family lived on Westview and her father, Eugene Mehegan, served on the tenders to the liners taking passengers from Cobh to the ship.  Finding genealogical information on people in Ireland is difficult but the previous information was great.

The 1901 and 1911 Irish Census is online and free to search and is very informative.

For some reason though I can't find either of my grandmother's parents on these censuses.  William Edmonds married to Bridget Mullany and living in Cork, my grandmother was Ellen Edmonds born in 1872.

If anyone can help me with this, I would be very grateful.  Also where could I get information about the Mehegan/Mehigan family prior to 1901.

thanks very much Cobhrambler,Celtic liberty. I found the Lusitania gravestones and Navy graves online but it didn't look as if there were any civilians or local residents listed. I look forward to emailing Mr Gilmartin as it would be good to see his list. There ought to be thousands of people's burials recorded. Thanks very much

There are over 11,000 recorded burials in the Old Church Cemetery alone dating from 1698! All listed in a searchable database!

Hi all,

some years ago I was in touch with Luke Cassidy who documented the 11,000 headstones at the old graveyard.  If it is online can someone tell me the internet site where it can be found.  Luke unfortunately passed away shortly after my introduction to him.

thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,
The database is apparently in the hands of the Great Island Historical Society:
"This society has a data base of over 10,000 people buried in the Clonmel (Old Church) Graveyard at Cobh (formerly Queenstown), including 170 of those from the Lusitania sinking. Dates from: 1698 to 1984. They will check their records free of charge (include something for postage)." (http://kieranmccarthy.ie/wordpress/?p=536     Eddie Buckley, 021 4811903)
