Margaret's age could be mistranscribed in 1881.  27 read as 21 is easily done.

Hi Monica

Source: FamilySearch for Margaret Wier b. 1860 in Falkirk

indexing project (batch) number: C11671-5 system origin: Scotland-VR
   source film number:   1066638

... and good catch Magic Mirror, if she was 27, then born in 1854! ;D

It was only a vague suggestion.  And I don't think it's right now.  I've found another Margaret Weir for you who was actually born in 1860 a bit closer to Falkirk than Torphichen.  And certainly lived in Falkirk for several years as a child.

1871 census

Nethertown Cottage, Muiravonside, Stirlingshire
James Weir 35 Miner b Torphichen
Jane Weir 32 b Polmont
Margaret Weir 11 b Polmont
Agnes Weir 7 b Polmont
Andrew Weir 5 b Falkirk
John Weir 3 b Falkirk
ED 44 p10 line 21

I can't find Margaret's birth but the other 3 children (+ a 4th,  William born in 1873 in Muiravonside) can be found at Familysearch.  Their mother's name is Jane Easton

If you are inputting West Lothian as the county (either at Familysearch or Scotlandspeople) you will miss them because all this is in Stirlingshire.

Yes Caroline, this sounds much more likely!  Thanks for the next piece in the puzzle.

I wonder whether that other possibility (William Weir & Margaret Easton) were brother and sister to James Weir and Jane Easton?

Cheers,   Peter

Caroline, the possible Margaret that you found looks to have been born before the parents married. From IGI, I think her birth details show as: Margaret Easton, b. 20 Jan. 1860 in Polmont, Stirling, mother Jean Easton. Parents look to have married a year later in Polmont.

From 1881:

John Brodie 25 b. Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire
Margaret Brodie 21 b. Falkirk, Stirlingshire
Jane Easton Brodie 2 Months b. Bathgate, Linlithgowshire

Address: Ballencrieff Mains, Bathgate

Peter, as suggested earlier, at one point it might be an idea for you to confirm the info that has been found so far through marriage and death certs.

I think Caroline's find now looks spot on, but you can see how easy it is to go off lines on the research without verifying details along the way through some certs.

Thanks to the help of all of you, I have pushed back my ancestry to John Brodie (1759 in Linlithgow) and Mary Reid (1760 in Ratho)

I have lots of info on three of their children (and their descendants) including James (1794 -  1860), David (1791 - 1868) and Archibald (1794 –post 1861), my GGG GF.

Does anyone have anything further on John Brodie and Mary Reid – i.e their parents, death dates, other children (I believe there was a Janet (b. 1781) and a John (b. 1888), etc.)

Thanks,  Peter
