Military records - John Begley b1852
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 00:03 BST (UK) »
Hi , me again ;)

I'm now looking for details on a John Begley.

b qtr Mar 1852 St Pancras, London 1b/98
1861 census has him age 9, living in some sort of boarding house in London.
1871 census - not found.
1875 - m Elizabeth Bennett, in Bengal
1879 - has son in Malta (Charles John Begley)
1881 - has son in Portsmouth (Louis Napoleon Begley)
1881 census - Fulwood Barracks, Nr Preston, Lancs - Sergeant, 108th regt.
1883 - has son in Ireland (John W Begley)
1891 census - Clothiers Salesman, Ardwick.
1901 census - Clothiers Salesman, South Manchester
d Mar 1918, Salford.

I'd be really interested in any of his military records.

I got this from Wikipedia:

"The 108th Regiment of Foot (Madras Infantry) was an infantry regiment of the British Army from 1862 to 1881, when it was amalgamated into The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

The regiment was originally raised by the Honourable East India Company in 1854 as the 3rd Madras (European) Regiment, and served in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. As with all other "European" units of the Company, they were placed under the command of the Crown in 1858, and formally moved into the British Army in 1862, ranked as the 108th Foot.

As part of the Childers Reforms in 1881, the regiment was amalgamated with the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot to form The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers."

So that would explain what he was doing in India... the rest of it I'm drawing a blank!

What was he doing in Malta?

Any clues? I've had a look on Ancestry but I can't find anything relevant.

Thanks a million :)

What was he doing in Malta?

Hi Spitzmum.

Malta was one of the army's Mediterranean stations.
Gibraltar, Cyprus and Egypt were others.

Hi,

Looks like John Begley is my great great grandfather on my mothers (Edna May Begley, still living) side.
