Rev Nicholas Carter
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 14:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parentage of my ancestor Rev Nicholas Carter he wa born in 1687, in an unknown place but I suspect it could very well be Kent, he married twice firstly to a Margaret Swayne and had five children Nicholas, Elizabeth, James, John and Margaret and then secondly to a Mary Bean and had three children Mary, Rev Henry and Edward, he died in Deal, Kent in 1774, if anyone knows any information I would love to hear about it.
 Thank you

I found him on the Cambridge University Alumni site http://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/Documents/acad/search.html

It doesn't name his father but it looks as if he was born in Buckinghamshire.

Hi,

I am curious about the children of Nicholas Carter, since one of them is Elizabeth, the poet and translator. She was born in 1717, but do you happen to know the birth years of her siblings? I am particularly curious as to whether Nicholas and James were her older or younger brothers?

best,
Pia

Hello Beth
The information I have from Parish Records re Nicholas Carter is as follows:

There is no record of Nicholas Carter being baptised in Deal or married to his first wfe, Margaret. This would have happened in another parish as would the baptism of their first son Nicholas of which there is als no record. He baptised four children at St Leonard's Church, Deal:
1/1/1717 Elizabeth (renowned as a literary scholar and 'bluestocking.' There is a house in Deal called Elizabeth Carter House - two cottages knocked into one, where she once lived and which is still lived in today).
26/2/1718 Richard
28/2/1723 John
25/10/1725 Margaret

He married his second wife Mary Bean at St Leonard's on 2/4/1729 and had four more children.
10/11/1730 Mary
24/6/1736 Sara
10/9/1739 Henry
12/9/1741 Ann

Hope this helps

Regards

AJ

AJ100 - thank you SO much for that information. Is it possible that Richard (born 1718) is also named James? And would you happen to have any death dates? I am in Texas so finding this information is just a hair difficult ....
