1871 census entry - but already dead? - completed
« on: Thursday 09 September 10 15:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I'm normally a lurker, but have decided to post about a detail in my family tree that has been annoying me lately!

I have a printed family tree that was passed down to me, it's quite old and very sparse on details. my 4 times great grandfather is Francis Wilson Heath, born 1808. He has two sisters Ann Eliza Heath who married William Gresham and Maria Heath who married Edgar Wickham.

Francis appears on the 1871 census as visitor to William and Ann Gresham. However, I found an Ann Eliza Heath on the probate calendar released on Ancestry recently who died in 1864 and named her brother, Francis, as executor.

Do you think the printed family tree I have is wrong? As surely they wouldn't enter her on a census after she died? The probate entry must be correct as they name Ann and Francis as siblings. I apologise for the long post, I have a lot of missing links on my family tree so lots of questions to ask!

What is everyone's take on this?

Thanks, Kirsty

Haven't checked any records yet, but my first thought is that wouldn't Ann Eliza be on the probate calendar under her maiden name of Gresham?

Hi

Welcome to rootschat  :)

It certainly looks like the right probate as it names Francis Wilson Heath - I presume the address means something to you.

If she had married William Gresham surely the probate would name her as Ann Eliza Gresham  ???  When and where is she supposed to have married William ?

Rosie

Francis W HEATH is with William and "Anne" GRESHAM in 1861 as well: RG9/5/2/4

She's "Anna" in 1881 as well: RG11/1076/87/31, and also in 1851: HO107/1527/99/76.

And her children's christenings and her death show her as Anna Maria  :)

Maria & Edgar Wickham both died in Clapton (1879 and 1878 respectively) - late of Beulah Hill, Norwood.  So it certainly looks as though Ann Eliza Heath remained single until her death in 1864
