Eustache/Mahieu family history
« on: Friday 10 September 10 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm trying to find out where my Great Grandfather was born in France, and then to drill down for his family history. I believe it could be Portbail in Normandy. His name was Auguste Jean Louis Mahieu, born circa 1857. He married Jane Elizabeth Celeste Eustache, d/o Jean Eustache born 1821 in Portbail. They lived in St Martin Jersey for several years and Jean is on the 1871, 1891 and 1901 Census, but I can't find Auguste on any Census.

Any assistance/ guidance would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Could you have another look at the dates of birth and clarify

What is Jean's marital status on the various censuses - married or widow

Was Jean living in Jersey on each of the censuses you mention?

Where was their first child born?  If in France that would indicate they married there

So Jean has become Jane and was b 1862 St Martins Jersey

I'm puzzled - you say you have Jean/Jane on the 1891 census but cannot find Auguste

This is the 1891 entry you refer to - all b St Martins except John L A

John L A Mahieu 35 b France gen labourer (christian names shown above were Jean Louis Auguste)
Jane E  31
August   8
Mary J A   5
Clarence M L   1
George F 3 months

Chris here. I'm new to this but from my info, Jean (John)  is the father, Jane is the daughter. Jane was married to Auguste Jean Louis Mahieu poss in France but matbe in Jersey. This is the kind of info I need to be able to trace back to where Auguste came from and his family roots. Any help again greatly appreciated. I live in Guernsey, so if needed a trip to Portbail is ok in due course. Thanks for all the feedback so soon! Chris

Thanks Stewart

Hi

Do you agree that the 1881 and 1891 entries are the correct ones as both show Jane as b Jersey - not France

Neither the 1881/1891/1901 give a specific birthplace for Auguste - all just say France

If you have Jean in 1891 and 1901 then you also have Auguste.  In 1901 he is indexed as Juanstoff Mahieu  RG13 Piece 5318 Folio 107 Page 15

[Thanks for all this. I have no direct Jersey info yet, so perhaps as you say Jane was born there. I have asked Societe Jersiaise for help but await a response. I still cannot find any record of Auguste in Jersey but I am searching from Guernsey records so perhaps not comprehensive."Juanstoff " is a new name and references v helpful, so will retain for further investigation. Thanks very much!/quote]
