How do I find my Grandpa's RFC records?
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 16:08 BST (UK) »
My Dad tells me that my Grandpa joined the Royal Flying Corps around 1916/7.
That is all I know.

How can I find out more - or even better, find his service records?  ???
Welsh - London/Monmouthshire/Wiltshire
Evans - Croydon/Berkshire
Rycraft - Croydon/Northants/Cambs
Davies - Glamorgan/Cardigan
Wigton - St Lukes, London
Chalker - London/Devon/Somerset

Hi Mwelsh

WW1 service records for the RFC are held in the National Archives at Kew. They are in the series WO 363/364 but unfortunately a lot were destroyed in the Blitz. If he continued to serve after the war the records are kept in AIR79.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've been doing a similar hunt recently and had a lot of help from a person called David J. Barnes: www.rfc-rnas-raf-register.org.uk.

He did quite a lot of research for me, came up with a likely service number and recommended someone to look up the records at the National Archives (I'm a bit too far away ...).

If you are going to contact him, use the hotmail address, not the direct link (doesn't work).

I also found a useful fact sheet at:
http://collections.iwm.org.uk/upload/pdf/famhist-raf

Hope this helps - and good luck,

Ros

just discovered the site!
I too have been trying to find my granddad's RFC records - have tried the new WW 1 medal site but there seem to be few mentions of the Corps. Was wondering if he was seconded to it from the Army. Does anyone know if this happened?
