Sweeney / Sheerin marriage in Burt.
« on: Sunday 19 September 10 19:47 BST (UK) »
Thomas Sweeney and Mary Jane Sheerin  married in Burt  Co. Donegal on
20 Dec 1861 though I`ve no idea what denomination they were or which of the many parishes they came from..

How do I go about getting their marriage certificate and what  information will  it  provide ?

Unfortunately you will probably need to establish the family religion as full civil registration started in 1864, so if the family were Catholic there will be no marriage cert. Non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845, so if for example the family were Church of Ireland or married in a registry office then the marriage would be included in the civil index. You can search this index on familysearch, and use the details to order a marriage cert from the GRO - see :

 Introduction to Irish Records
Details included on a Marriage Cert

For earlier marriages (e.g. Catholic before 1864, or Church of Ireland before 1845), you would need to know where the family lived - i.e. town, townland or parish.

Thanks Shanew,

Oh dear - I`m not holding out much hope!
They left  Ireland and moved to Glasgow not long after their marriage and I know nothing else about them before that.

Catholic records for the parish of Burt should include an 1861 marriage - but dont go back very much further.  See Burt RC Parish, Co. Donegal (Irish Times Family History) for details of which records exist for the parish

Some Burt records on this site.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/Burtproj.htm

You could post what you have there as it gets a lot of traffic.

If they moved to Glasgow and died in Scotland, their death certs should have names of parents - information which may not be on church records.

The following are in Griffith's valuation for Sheerin for info on the valuation see:

www.nli.ie/en/griffiths-valuation.aspx

Sheerin         Anne              Mulleny

Sheerin         James             Mulleny
Sheerin         John              Mulleny
Sheerin         Peter             Mulleny
Sheerin         Richard           Bohullion, Lower

The likelehood is that they were married in her parish, so these people could be related. Have you been to Burt?
