Armstrongs of Monaghan
« on: Wednesday 22 September 10 08:46 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I understand that Maxwell Armstrong & wife Elizabeth (nee Moore?) had the following children baptised in Clones:

Robert 1796
Eleanor 1804
Sarah 1807
Margaret 1809
Thomas 1814
Christopher 1812
Johnston 1816

I think they then moved to Lisrace (Lisreask) Co Fermanagh.
Does anyone recognise this family? I'm keen to locate the father of Maxwell Armstrong.

Cheers,
Bob

The problem with Clones is it's location right on the border with Fermanagh, technically it is in Co Monaghan but only just, they may have lived/been born in Fermanagh.

You would be depending on church records so you'd need their religion.

I gather that it was the nearest C of E (???) church to them, so guess that you may well be correct. I'm told they certainly lived in Co Fermanagh.
I'm hoping that the slightly unusual Maxwell & Johnston Christian names might catch someone's attention.
Thanks,
Bob

Was thinking that by the names! The surnames Maxwell and Hamilton are also quite common in the area so possibly a "hint" of connections at an earlier stage to Maxwells, Hamiltons.

St Tighernach's C of E/C of I would probably be your best starting point. Records there go back to mid 1600's and the handwriting is impressive to say the least.

LDS have them on film I believe. The church only opens every second Sunday, other than that it's locked up like a fortress.

I can get the name/phone number of Minister there if you want. She would probably be your best bet.

That's extremely kind of you. Much appreciated.
Cheers,
Bob
PS I'm hoping that the Maxwell/Johnston names are due to earlier Scottish Borders connections.

The answer to that may well be in Essex! I'll explain later.

I don't think we are allowed put names/addresses etc here, so I'll P.M. you with details a.s.a.p. (today!)
