Wife: Mary Ann GRAHAM 37, b England
Son: Thomas 14
Dau: Mary Ann 12
Dau: Margaret 9
Dau: Elizabeth 8
Son: Alexander 3
Dau: Isabella 1
Son: Alfred 7 mths
All children b Galashiels

Here's the 1891
1891: Halliburton Place No 212, Galashiels

Is this what you are after - to take Grandfather's family back to find the parents and ancestors, Mary Ann's maiden name etc etc?  Or to find out what became of them, his parents & siblings after 1901?

Cheers

In 1871, they're in Consett still,  wrongly indexed as Matfield!

Mary Ann, 43, b. Durham Staindrop
Mary ann, 7, b. Consett

I'm not sure about Mary Ann's mother's surname. It's Shipley on marriage cert but there's a marriage Sept q, 1858, Durham v 10a p 256 with Matthew Whitfield and Mary Ann Thompson on the same page.

Then I've found a marriage Sep q, 1850, Durham v24 p 104 with a Mary Ann Shipley and a Robert Thompson on the same page.

Also, quite a few deaths for a Robert Thompson between 1850 and 1858, so the marriage to Matthew was probably a second marriage.
