COMPLETED Ampthill PR transcript
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 07:30 BST (UK) »
Various member submissions, but no extracted entry, show a marriage in Ampthill of Sarah RAYNES and Tubal Cain Lymley DYER on 16 Feb 1784

If anyone has access to the transcript does the marriage exist? I suspect Sarah was a widow as I think she was née Sarah REDMAN from Houghton Conquest

Also was the Tubal etc DYER who was buried on 10 Dec 1793 an adult, ie did he have an occupation, as opposed to the TCL Dyer who was baptised on 6 June 1790

Sarah DYER married William STAPLETON in Ampthill on 20 Oct 1795 (extracted). I'm sure from her father's will that she was Sarah Redman.

Many thanks

David

Hello David - had a good lunch time ?

Firstly, yes the marriage if Tubal Cain Lymley Dyer to Sarah Raynes does exist; & she is a widow & it is by licence. Both parties are of Ampthill & aged 21 & over. Surety was given by John Abbis, gardener of Ampthill.

+ there is another licence entry for him; on 28/11/1788 he stood surety at the marriage of John Morris, ironmonger of Ampthill to Eliza Richardson of Clophill. On this one Tubal etc.. is down as a victualler.

The burial on 10 Dec 1793 has no other details whatsoever; so we don't know if it's the father or his son; unless of course you find subsequent marriage/burial for the other person.

Next... the William Stapleton marriage to Sarah Dyer is there as expected, he is a widower - but it does not say she's a widow. However, luckily this also is by licence dated 27/9/1795. She was not listed under with the DYER name; she's with the AYER/AYERS (mis-transcription) & she is a widow of Ampthill, surety given by John Copeland of Aspley Guise.

All the best, John.                              On to the next.

Thanks very much John, and thanks for going the extra mile with the licence details. Odd that I can't find anything about Tubal Cain Lumley DYER, although there's a Tubal Cain LUMLEY in Northants 100 years earlier, which I refuse to put down to coincidence.

Quiet today, turnout was down. Bob, Peter and mini Katy, that was all. We were outside but it had been an odd morning, wind and showers, although it cleared up a bit later. John's at the coast for a week, looking after his landlady's cats while she's in England.

All the best

David

You probably already know this since the Northamptonshire PRs have been on Ancestry for a while now, but there is a Tubalcain Dyer baptised at Northampton All Saints in 1761 the son of Richard Dyer, woolcomber.  His mother was Eleanor Lumley sister of Tubalcain Lumley who died in 1796 at Harlestone and wrote a Will in 1793.  The Will mentions his nephews and nieces Richard Dyer, Charles Dyer, Michael Dyer, Mary Adams and Elizabeth Dyer, however I think the Charles is a mistake since there is a burial in 1777 of a Charles Dyer in Northampton All Saints and no sign of a burial for Tubalcain.  The fact that Tubalcain Dyer in Ampthill uses the middle name Lumley seems too big a coincidence.  Added to that it looks like Tubalcain Dyer's sister Mary and her husband William Adam ended up in Woburn moving there from Kingsthorpe.

Tubalcain Lumley Dyer was buried at Southwark St Saviour 23 Jan 1790, he is listed as a Victualler.  Again, you may already know this so the 1793 burial must be the son.
