COMPLETED - Forster Urwin - Birtley
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 12:38 BST (UK) »
I need any information possible on a Forster (Foster) Urwin living in Birtley 1841 aged 35 suggesting a birth year circa 1806. Note the ancestry site incorrectly transcribed the family name as 'Amrin'.  I cannot find him or his family ( Wife Ann aged 35, daughter Ann age 9 , son Richard age 7, daughter Barbary age 5 and daughter Jane age 5 months. I have two key facts , one a death entry in 1870 at Bellingham office where Foster Urwin was age 65. Also I have marriage certificate for his son Richard showing/suggesting that Forster/Foster was still alive in 1864. The son Richard was noted as living in Gunnerton at time of marriage in 1864. I cannot trace the family in the 1851/1861 census or any matching entries on IGI. My interest is the son Richard who I have full details on from his marriage onwards, but would like to trace his birth/baptism and where his parents came from.
Many Thanks....Dave

Interesting!

http://pilot.familysearch.org

Christening 24 Jan 1834 Birtley Northumberland
Richard Bestford, parents Forster and Ann

also Ann, 4 Dec 1831, same parents;

There are other children christened to Forster and Ann Bestford, among which an earlier Richard in 1828, called Richard Urwin Bestford

Forster Bestford married Ann Heslop in 1827 at Birtley.

Forster Bestford was christened in 1805 at Birtley to an unmarried mother Ann Bestford. Maybe she married a Mr Urwin later?

As to why his wife is suddenly Eleanor in 1851 and 1861:
Marriage Dec 1843 Hexham 25 299 Foster Besford - Eleanor Turnbull
(marriage 11 Nov 1843 Chollerton according to http://pilot.familysearch.org)

All - this has been great - many many thanks. It would appear that Forster kept changing throughout his life, he was baptised Bestford 1805, married as Bestford  to Ann Heslop in 1827, baptised all his children as Bestford, then in 1841 declared as Urwin in the census,. In 1842 his first wife died and was registered as Ann Bestford. n 1851 and 1861 he declared as Bestford again. his second wife Eleanor 's death was registered as Eleanor Urwin,  his death was registered as Foster Urwin. His son Richard married as Richard Urwin declaring his father was Foster Urwin. What I cannot see at the beginning of all this is what the Urwin connection is. Forster Bestford was baptised to mother Ann Bestford/Besford. Her parentage does not involve Urwins that I can see, does anyone have any ideas.

We don't know much about Forster's mother Ann, do we?

I wonder if these christening all belong to the same mother:
Forster Bestford, 13 Mar 1805 Birtley, mother Ann
Ann Bestford, 11 Oct 1806 Birtley, mother Ann
Mary Bestford, 4 Jun 1811 Birtley, mother Ann

Maybe the father simply was a Mr Urwin whom she never married ...

Even assuming she was born in Birtley, I can see 2 possible christenings:
9 Feb 1783 Birtley to John Besford and Mary
17 Feb 1771 to John Besford and Margaret

I realise this doesn't answer any of your questions  :P

I have no doubt that it is the John and Margaret, her maiden name was Forster as the Forster is the key to the original query, they married 22 Dec 1768 in Birtley. I have extracted from IGi all the Bestfords and analysed all. There seems to be an extra John. I have only one baptism in 1749 in Northumberland yet we have a marriage in 1768, I think the correct one, but also another in November 1771 to a Sarah Robson, perhaps second marriage.
I cannot find a marriage of a John to a Mary
