Frederick Allen b Bradford on Avon 1835 ish
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 10:16 BST (UK) »
Frederick Allen was born between April 1835 and March 1836 in Bradford on Avon according to the 1871 Census for 74 Mare Street, Hackney. His parents may have been John and Eliza (nee Farmilo) Allen, married at Holy Trinity, Bradford on 3 Jul 1834. He appears in the 1851 (Bethnal Green), 1871 (Hackney) 1881 (Hackney) and 1891 (Great Yarmouth) Censuses but I can't find him in 1861 or after 1891. He married Elizabeth Esther Speaight at St James The Great, Bethnal Green on 28 May 1855. She died aged 37 on 5 Dec 1874.  After she died, he married Mary Ann Button in June 1876. My grand-mother said they moved around the country and mentioned that they lived at Clapham Common and Fairseat Manor (near Wrotham, Kent). I am interested to know:
1. Any details on his ancestry
2. Where he was in 1861
3. What happened to him after 1891

In 1841 he would appear to be in Bradford, in a household with
Eliza ALLEN, 24, Weaver
Frederick ALLEN, 4
James ALLEN, 3
Phillip FARMELO, 19, Plasterer
William PARADIZY??, 20, Baker
All born in county

IGI has John ALLEN and Eliza FARMELO marrying in 1834 as you said.

In 1851 Frederick is with his brother James, mother Eliza and stepfather Samuel ARNO, in Bethnal Green.

Do you have Allen ancestors? I ask because my aunt told me that one of her great aunts, Emmie, retired with her husband (Harry but don't know surname) to NZ. What she wrote is fascinating, especially on their eccentricity.

Hello Lime Tree

Just wanted to say very many thanks for posting the photo of Frederick Allen. It's the first time we have come across one for this particular great great grandfather and he looks a bit like living family members! If you have any others of the family, please let me know.

I imagine by now you will have Frederick's date of death - my records have it as 7th October 1911 in Great Yarmouth.

Shortly before then, Frederick and Marian are in the 1911 census living at 3 Norfolk Square in Great Yarmouth with daughters Edith and Daisy

Best wishes

R

I am also researching Frederick Allen and would be very interested in hearing about this man. I have his basic bmd & census details but am intrigued by the comment that he was not a nice man.

Regards,

He was my maternal great-grandfather. My aunt, Phyllis Parkinson (nee Garrett), said of him "Frederick Allen had a violent temper and his children were afraid of him; his first wife's children were denied everything, even their mother's jewellery was given to their half-sisters. Nevertheless, my mother, Louise, had strong relationships with her half sisters. She (Phyllis) did not know why the Allen family were so eccentric but wondered whether it was the result of Frederick Allen's Victorian repression or the unsettled background of litigation in which he was always indulging.  Apparently all his children were afraid of him and his violent temper - he used to throw his dinner across the room if it was served on a cracked plate".

I have attached my aunt's document on the Allens and also a photo of Frederick Allen.

I'd be interested in anything you turn up on Frederick - perhaps you'll find he wasn't as bad as my aunt painted him!
