Welford Road Cemetery
« on: Friday 08 October 10 14:14 BST (UK) »
I believe I have some ancestors buried at Welford Road abt 1870's. Reading some comments on the board it implies that there is a CD availble of the cemetery burials. Is this the case and if so how can you obtain one? Would it be worth a visit to try to find headstones of this era or is this area overgrown or been reused.

it's a huge place & the chances of finding a gravestone 'on spec' would be v limited- you could be there all week!  Why not post some details of your ancestors here & i'm sure someone will help with their grave details if possible.

I have a copy of the Welford Road Cemetery Burial Index (1849 - 1890) CD. If you give me the names you are researching I will only too pleased to have a look for them.

I can't see Elizabeth on the records, and whilst there appears to be both a Robert and a John who may be connected with your family, the dates are different from those you give.

Plot uS 99 holds the following:

COX, BARTHOLOMEW bur APR 9 1871    age73   LEICESTER BOROUGH ASYLUM   HUMBERSTONE

COX,   GEORGE   bur  MAY 13 1880    age 49   LEICESTER BOROUGH ASYLUM   HUMBERSTONE

COX, BARTHOLOMEW bur  FEB 8 1875    age 38   CHURCH GATE   SAINT MARGARET

COX,   JOHN   bur JUN   30 1881   age   1   FEVER HOSPITAL   FREAKS GROUND

COX, ROBERT JOHN   bur JUL 13 1881   age 4   GEORGE STREET   SAINT MARGARET

HASTINGS, ANNIE   bur DEC 8 1914   age 28   NORTH E. INFIRMARY   LEICESTER   [EVINGTON]

BARTHOLOMEW COX buried 9th April 1871 aged 73 years
Abode: Leics. Borough Asylum. Parish or District: Humberstone
Unconsecrated ground. Section S. Plot no. 99 Mode C. Burial No. 25899

GEORGE COX buried 13th May 1880 aged 49 years
Abode: Leics. Borough Asylum. Parish of District: Humberstone
Unconsecrated ground. Section S. Plot No. 99 Mode C. Burial No. 44381

These are the only two I can find on the Welford Road Cemetery Index which fit with the details provided. There are quite a number of Cox buried there.

On the National Burial Index I found details of a ROBERT COX but he is aged 2 buried 26th March 1879 at Hathern St. Peter & Paul, Leics. It also states Anglican.

Like Annie65115 can find no trace of Elizabeth.

This is my first Rootchat post - so hope I get it right..

I'm interested in locating info on the burial of
William Carpenter who died in Leicester in 1863 (aged 72)

and Ann Carpenter who died in Leicester in 1828 (aged 45).

I've been given info for the burial for Ann Carpenter as being Welford Rd Civic Cemetery Plot UR 2025 but this doesnt seem likely if the cemetery didnt open until 1845.

Any advice/help much appreciated
thanks
Diana (Sydney Aust)

William Carpenter Buried 9th January 1863 aged 71 years
abode Crab Street in the parish of St. Margaret.

Grave details:
Part U. Section R. Plot no. 2025.
Mode C (Common ground). Burial no. 11833.

Notes at the side says Coroner's Warrant. (Possibility there will be a report of the inquest in a local paper)

Info from Welford Road Burial Index 1849 - 1890.

Have a disc for earlier burials in Leicester (for Ann's details) but having problems opening it, once resolved will get back to you with any results.

Best wishes
