I am researching the surname Velvick and was told that is came from the surname Fieldwick/Feldwick. I cannot find anything about this name change but I do know that the name Velvick has much history in Kent, England. Can anyone help with my research on Velvick? ??? Even just a little.  :-*
Thanks ;D
My understanding is that there was a Danish invasion of Wessex in the 1300s. It was quelled and the invaders stayed on. The Velvick (Velvyck or similar)name could have originated from that period. My great grandmother was Edith Emma Velvick of Tenterden and my Grandfather was George Redvers Charles Davis, born in Smallhythe June 1 1900.

Although this name has Scandinavian siblings, the name is used interchangeably with Feldwick.

Feldwick: Descendant of one of lived at the farm in the field.

The name occurs several times in the subsidy rolls (14th C): http://www.british-history.ac.uk/search.aspx?query=Feldwyk%20de&rf=pubid:513

There are also two IPMs that narrow down the location:

JOHN FELDWICK. Vol. 233, No. 46.
Chichester, 3 April 34 Eliz. Died 1 Jan. 33 Eliz.
Heir, son William, aged 30 and more at Inq.
Lands. " Feldwicke " in West Hoathly.

405.

WILLIAM FELDWICKE. Vol. 581, No. 115.

E. G-., 5 Aug. 15 Chas. Died 4 Aug. 9 Chas. at West Hoathly.

Heir, son John, then aged 40 and more.

Lands." Feldwickes " in Westhothly. Made will 25 July 1628
son John F. wife grandson John F., grandson William F., grand-
son Thomas F. my grandchild John Balcombe my daughters Anne,
Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary. My grandchild Thomas Hard wick.

So you could possibly locate the exact location the name originated with via tithe maps or other records.

It's all very interesting. The Velvicks married into the Buenger family. I'm told that when Buengers' emigrated to the USA the name often became Bunker. Now that's all in the family

As a Velvick descendent I note there are two theories, one that is is Feldwick and the other relates to a Danish name Velvyckk??? My great grandmother was Edith Velvick of Tenterden
