Nolan/Oakes of Rathvilly
« on: Friday 08 October 10 23:58 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am seeking information on John Nolan(born circa 1865).  He married Elizabeth Oakes.  They had at least one daughter , Ellen, who was born around 1890 in Rathvilly.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..
Sara Carroll

Have you searched for the family in 1901 and 1911 census yet?

Nolan is a very common surname, especially in Co. Carlow - so not an easy search. Luckily Oakes is not common, although there may be spelling variations.

I had a look on the BMD Index and only see a few marriages for the name Elizabeth Oakes - two are much too late (1916 & 1908) another is in Dundalk in 1884, the last fitls the locations a little better and is in the Enniscorthy registration district (Co. Wexford) and a bit to the south of the Rathvilly. It is possibly a little bit too early (Patrick would only be 17 in 1882)  :

 Name: Elizabeth Oakes
 Registration District: Enniscorthy
 Event Type: Marriage
Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1882
 volume : 4 / page: 239

I dont see a cross match to a John Nolan.

The registration district for Rathvilly is Baltinglass, which also also covers parts of counties Wicklow and Kildare.

There are a number of possible Ellen Nolan births around the right time..the best match that I see is :

 Name: Ellen Nolan
 Registration District: Baltinglass
 Event Type: Birth
Quarter and Year: Jul - Sep 1888
 volume : 2 / page : 349

There's no guarantee that is the correct record, but it seems to me to be one that best fits the clues you have.

Hi there I am looking into whether my Byrne family is related to the Nolans.  Both families were from Rathvilly, I have a michael byrne married to a lady named ellen and we think her maiden name is Nolan? Can anyone provide further information?  P.s, Michael Byrne lived in Rathvily Village and was a farm labourer and owned a piggery. He was born about 1840c
