Hi

Could it be R.S.D. which stands for Rural Sanitary District.

I think it is definitely R.S.O as the Durham Mining Museum mentions Heighington, R.S.O.

Hi there,

Could it mean
R (Regiment/Retired)  S (Service) O (Offices/ers) as in an organisation set up to support those who had retired from the Army or Navy.  There would have been many returned servicemen after the Boer Wars ...

Cheers, JM

It could be, but not sure why it would be put in as part of the place name

Everything I've found links it with the Railway Sub Office and a person's state of residence, or a specific location ??

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,96029.0.html

The link above claims RSO, is a short lived postal abbreviation which makes sense. I suppose if you put them together meaning the person's postal address may be the Railway Sub Office, if they weren't staying in one place long enough to warrant an actual address.

Therefore the RSO would be a temporary measure.

Agh

so it could be a bit like a "poste restante" service

Thanks Pels

I am not sure about the Railway Sub Office, however it it was a short lived postal abbreviation, Then it is possible.

I have found a few more examples and all appear to be farms.

If they were farms, could that mean they collected their own post from the R.S.O. because they were so remote - I'm sure there must be a postal/railway connection, it's just finding it Emma ?

If you read through the above there's something about the RSO.
