Good morning Valda,  I drew a blank with the Daughters of the Cross.  They run a residential home in Chelsea/Kensington, as well as other places.  I approached their headquarters and though helpful, they say they never had anything to do with St Edwards.  Still, even leads that run out are exciting to follow up, and you meet such helpful people.

I have approached the Planning and Surveying department of the council to find out what I can about the building, it's history, and whether or not it is still there.

Best regards,

Kincaid

Hi

Jeff Knaggs 1901 census institutions records the school as

St Edward's School A Catholic School for Poor Children Conducted by the Daughters of the Cross Totteridge, Herts

RG13 1229 folio 152-158

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeffery.knaggs/Instuts.html

and (dated 1999)

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/LONDON/1999-01/0915565374

which says

'For anyone else who is interested in the above place, it was run by the
Daugters of the Cross but they gave the buildings over to the Missionaries
of Africa (White Fathers) certainly by the late 1950s. As to archives and
records, these do exist. Obviously, some periods are better covered than
others, but if you were to contact the Provincial Superior of the Daughters
of the Cross, giving as much information as you have, she will be able to
tell you what records are available. Her name and address is:

Sr.Mary Kelly
Provincial Superior
St.Wilfrid's Convent
29 Tite Street
Chelsea
London
SW3 4JX'

This information is confirmed by the White Father's website

http://www.thepelicans.co.uk/history41.htm

'(Taken from the White Fathers magazine October 1958)

0n Wednesday, 17th of September, this year (1958), the Archbishop of Westminster presided over the ceremonial opening of the White Fathers' International Scholasticate at Totteridge in North London......

There were present at the ceremony some Sisters of the Daughters of the Holy Cross who, at one time had a convent and an orphanage at St. Edward's. To them and to all present at the ceremony, it was a special joy to see the house again in religious hands.'

However old post on Rootschat where someone else had tried unsuccessfully to access the records contacting the Chelsea address

Valda,  I am speechless!   I am always telling people what a wonderful site Rootschat is, and in truth it is the people who run it and contribute to it who make it what it is . . .

Thank you - will continue and report back

Many hanks

I don't know if this will help - but my mother was in St. Joseph's in Totteridge from 1931.  This was run by Daughters of the Cross.  She contacted the archivist many years later who managed to find out some of her background from the records kept at the time.  It did take 9 months for a reply, but at least they did reply.

As someone said - the children were sometimes orphans and sometimes did have a parent who couldn't cope.

Boys were in another home nearby.

Hi Philomena,

Thank you very much for that . . . That gives me another avenue to follow . . .A letter has already been composed in respect of St Edward's, and I add St Josephs' to it.

Many thanks

Hello Kincaid444,

I too have a girl I am researching who appears in both 1891 and 1901 census of St Edwards School, Totteridge, Kate Flanagan, showing as a student of 9 in 1891 and as a housemaid in 1901.  I had tried previously to find info on this school and came across your query on this forum a few months ago. I wonder if you ever found any futher information regarding the school records for this School from the information Valda has given?

Any information would be very much appreciated as to how and whether you were ever able to find the records. The Kate Flanagan I am looking for was born 1882 in Pancras workhouse and either her mother was not able to keep and take care of her or may even have died.  Knowing more about the school and how young girls were able to go there may hopefully shed further light onto her so I am hopeful you were able to find records for your Georgina Ford.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
jvincent

Hi Vincent - I started the thread on Georgina on behalf of a friend who did not know her way round the genealogy sites - I can put you in touch with her if you like as she was the one who continued the searching - I know she went to the 'headquarters' of the school, which I think may have been Roman Catholic, and she found them quite unhelpful.

Let me know if you would like to speak to her and I will ask her if that is OK, which it should be as she is a lovely person

My grandmother was an orphan here from 1914 - 1928. I have only just started my research, I will be posting my findings here.
