Aron [sic!] Cohen, boot maker, is recorded in Kensington in 1911 with most of the children. However, there is no sign of Fanny; his wife is now called Rebacca [sic!].

Gaie - can you check out the details. How long had they been married, how many children, etc.

I thought Irene could be Morris/ Maurices daughter, he married a Esher Schneiderman in 1921 and had Irene, Norman and then Schlimas. Irene got enaged to Henry Frener and been a solicitor with her brother Norman and a Sidney Gonshaw.

You're right that would seem more logical. I'll see if the engagement announcement in the Jewish Chronicle provides more details.

I believe that Gonshaw is an anglicization of the Polish-Jewish surname GONSZOR (pronounced gonshor).

Variants are GONSZER, GONSZOROWICZ, GONSZEROWICZ.

I'm stuggling to find what the origin may have been.

wow, where you got that from I don't know but I am very impressed, the name is definitely anglicanised, apparantly there is an interview with a family member in 1983 about their history, so I'm going to get to Colindale Newspaper library tommorow and confirm it (hopefully)
Joan A Barrett got married to a John Negal in 1941, had A. M in 1943, got married to Alfred in 44, had a baby (who died shortly after) called Sandra and renamed A M as a Gonshaw in 45. However he seems to have continued using his fathers name Negal afterwards ??? I'm baffed and this is exactly when you want to be able to look at a census at that time, is there any way or where you can that you might know of?

Hi again

Yep, definitely says Rebacca this time!  Married 28 years, 7 children born, 7 children living.  Oldest children Reuben and Rachel's names are written down then crossed out; we know Reuben was married and living elsewhere by then.  And now they have a servant from Devon.  Living at 28 Powis Terrace.

That's fantastic! I wonder did somebody confuse her with Reuben's wife?

Would mind looking up Isaac Gonshaw, wife Ruzel and family in Willesden?

I can't help thinking that the family is related somehow.

Well, unless A(a)ron, who filled the form in and signed it, made the mistake.... ;D

The 1901 image definitely says Fanny.  Of course, we don't know who filled that original form in to be transcribed by the enumerator.  The four younger children were born in St John's Wood before 1901, and no children appear to have been born after that date.  Their birth certs would have mother's name.

Gonszor is not a common name at all, is it?

I'll look up Isaac and Ruzel.

Isaac was a 33 year old bootmaker from Russia of Russian nationality!
Wife Ruzel (30), and four children, ?Akta (dau 6), Samuel (4), Leah (3) and Rebecca (18mths) have no place of birth/nationality written down.  Married seven years.  Four children born.  Isaac filled in and signed the form by the looks of it.
