scott family-Fife
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 21:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I am currently researching my Scott family, from Cupar and surrounding areas, back as far as 1790. How can I get details of burial plots in Fife.  My first known relation is Alexander Scott born around 1790 who married Robina (Binnie) Miller in Beath 9/5/1818. She was born in Leslie around 1797(1794), some doubt. She died in Leslie (Prinlaws) ON 21/4/1856 with age given as 62.
I would like to find especially Alexander,s birth and death details as he is not listed in the 1841 census. His wife and family are listed in the 1851 but not him.
Can anyone help?

HI, there are several listings of scott burials in the Fife NE memorial inscriptions book for cupar but not for the names you give. having a look now on the fife death index pre 1855. - there are 184 scotts listed in cupar, not alex /Robina

what is the last childs birth date to narrow down Alexs death?

if you are interested in the MI's book it is available from the Scottish Genealogical society:

Fifeshire North east parishes monumental inscriptions pre 1855.

lists by place and indexed by surname.

if you have the names of the children they might tie in with parents names. scottish naming pattern:

First son is named for the Father's Father.
Second son is named for the Mother's Father.
Third son is named for the Father's Father's Father.
Fourth son is named for the Mother's Mother's Father
etc

First daughter is named for the Mother's Mother.
Second daughter is named for the Father's Mother.
Third daughter is named for the Mother's Father's Mother.
Fourth daughter is named for the Father's Father's Mother
etc

Thanks Diddy
I think it is more likely that alexander scott died and is buried in Leslie, Fife. His wife robina died there in 1856. I can,t find details of them in 1841 census, but 1851 census has details of Robina and family, but no alexander. My family link is through her son thomas. The latest birth I can find was peter in 1834. I have found 5 children all born in Leslie between 1823 and 1834. So he may have died between 1834 and 1851. On his son thomas,s marriage records he is listed as a ploughman. On the short marriage record in 1818 alexander and robina were married in Beath Fife, but no details apart from the fact he was labourer.  On the 1851 census Robina,s birth place is given as Leslie.

Hi Gerry - I did check the MI's for Leslie - no go. but will look again at the fife death index with latest info. trouble is that several Alex scotts do not give further info ie relative -wife /occupation /age at death!!

Hi gerry - looking at a death 1834 -1841 (i looked at 1841 on SP for ages 45 -55 and nothing fits, only 2 there and both with other families) this one might fit but no way of confirming:

Alexander Scott  died Ceres,cupar
12/4/1834, age 42,   decline

that means birth date 1791/2 which unfortunatley would fit with either i gave!! no Alexander Scott deaths in Leslie at all on index.

Thanks Diddy

Will look at that alexander who died in Ceres. He may have been a farm worker who travelled around NE Fife for work.
