Nellie Finn
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 14:03 BST (UK) »
Does anybody have any information on ancestors of Nellie Finn, daughter of Cornelius Finn, born in Ballincollig ca.1870.
She married my great grandfather in Southport Lancashire in 1893.
I'm interested in any information about her family (mother, siblings, grandparents?)

Hello,

this will be a help to you:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html

The Family Search pilot site indicates an 1868 baptism (I think) record for Ellen Finn -parents Cornelius Finn and Mary Crowly.
Then you can look for a civil record in the indexes on that site.

This couple can be seen on Irish census 1901

Hello again,

by searching for Cornelius on FS pilot site, you get other children born to this couple.

By 1911 census, Mary is a widow and it indicates that she was married 50 yrs and had 6 children  - 5 still alive.

There is a Margaret Finn as a servant also in Ballincollig area in that census.

Even though the familyearch records suggests that Ellen Finn record is a baptism, I think it's actually an extracted civil birth record, as it includes civil reference details :

 Name: Ellen Finn
 Birth Date: 23 Nov 1868
 Birthplace: 93, Ballincollig, Cork
 Father's Name: Cornelius Finn
 Mother's Name: Mary Crowly
 Ref. v 20-B p 93

There are three separate records for the same person, so I've combined some details. The 93 in the 'address' and reference fields is the page number on the civil register, which you can use to search for the correct BMD references needed to order a full cert. e.g.

 Name: Ellen Finn
 Registration District: Cork
 Event Type: Birth
 Year: 1868
 volume : 20 / page : 93

The Cork registration district includes Ballincollig. A cert will show more details - e.g. place of birth, residence and occupation of father etc..

I am the great grandaughter of John and Nellie (Finn) Gaskell.  I was born in Southport.  I have just come across the post for Nellie Finn whilst looking for her date of death.  I thought she had died during the first world war but from these posts it would seem to be later. Thanks for the information which I see was a long time ago but I have only just discovered this site!!!
I`m visiting Cork in May and am hoping to get more information on the Finn family.

Hi Linda,
Ellen (Nellie) Finn was my Great Grandmother too. My Father was John Gaskell, son of Samuel, who was in turn son of John and Nellie Gaskell. According to my records Nellie died in 1920 of stomach cancer. Of Samuels brothers and sisters I remember meeting Leonard, Margaret and Nellie. My dad was brought up in Hart Street, Southport where I spent many summer holidays as a child. I would be happy to share my family tree with you if you use the private message service to send me an email address.

Hiya Peter
Thanks for that information. Yes I would love to see the family tree.  I have had a bit of a go over the years but not too sure of its accuracy the further back you go.
How do I message you privately to give my email address?
I am the grandaughter of Albert and daughter of William (Bill).
I was actually brought up in Hart Street but wasn`t aware your grandad had lived there. It is a long street and my dad was a notoriously private person.  Mum who was the complete opposite had very fond memories of your grandad.  She said he was friendly and welcomed her into the family.
