Hi everyone,
I have sent off for the birth cert. of Jane Ewers (b. 1837), Henry & Mary's youngest child in 1841 census, so should receive it showing mother's maiden name next week. Will post details then. Thanks for your input.
All the best,
PenJ

Hi Erika,
I now have the birth cert. for Jane Ewers, b 1.4.1838 in Little Baddow, d. of Henry, shoemaker and Mary Ewers, formerly WESTWOOD.
I hope this of use to you. I still don't know if 'my' Mary Ann who married Petchey  in 1842 is definitely a child of this couple. Will have to see what I can find in SOG library records.
Regards, PenJ :)

Hi PenJ

Many thanks for letting me know about the birth, another name to look for now, Westwood. It's certainly one I haven't seen before, but will have a look at census records and see if there are any in the Little Baddow area.

Cheers
Erika :)

Hi
I've now found marriage of Henry Ewers and Mary Westwood: 24 July 1821 at East Hanningfield, which is where Mary Ann Ewers was born c. 1822 though I still haven't found her christening record.
[Source Essex Marriage Registers vol 67.]
Erika, could you please let me know Henry Ewers' age on death cert. in 1854?  I've found bap. record for a Henry Ewers, s. of Matthew and Ann Ewers  on 11 May 1783 in Little Baddow & mar. of M.E. of Boreham and Ann Foot by licence at Little Baddow on 1 Jan. 1771. Also baptisms of other children: John  5 May1771, Matthew 31 May 1772, Charles 19 Sept. 1784 & William  28 Dec. 1788.

That looks interesting PenJ, haven't come across East Hanningfield before.

On Henry's death cert it gives his age as 63 which would make his birth 1791. 1783 could be stretching it a bit :(  If the marriage date is correct he would have been 30, makes him quite an older father seeing as his last child Jane was born in 1837!

Did you go to the record office at Chelmsford for your information?

Cheers

Thanks, Erika, for info. from Henry's death cert. It certainly looks as if he isn't from the Matthew and Ann family., which is disappointing. I'm stumped for the moment, so if you come across any further details on this rather elusive family, please let me know. If only more of the records from this area were online!
No, I didn't go to Chelmsford but the SOG in London.
Bye for now,
PenJ
